Friday, July 1, 2011 (Three Islands Resort, Summit Lake, BC)

Happy Canada Day!  We woke to blue sky and sunshine this morning...unfortunately, it didn’t last though.  We had our usual start to the day and then after breakfast Steve headed out to unload the quads and get ready for the ride with Bob and Carol...we would be leaving at 11:00.

We headed off driving through the campground’s over-flow area to a trail up to the highway and then zoomed along the highway for a short distance before crossing to the forest service road.  Bob had said that they had come across the mountain from McDonald Creek Provincial Park (on the Upper Arrow Lake) a few years ago...so we were going to see if we could find the right road.

Summit Lake (as is Slocan Lake and the Arrow Lakes) is nestled between two mountain ranges...the Monashee Mountains to the west and the Selkirk Mountains to the east.  We headed west climbing a mountain and trying many different roads and trails.  However, we never did find the right road...but from one mountain summit we could see the Provincial Park way below.  Such gorgeous views of the Arrow Lakes and the surrounding mountains and valleys...
This was one of our first stops as we headed up the mountain...Shamus, the Bloodhound needed a break...

Still lots of snow on those mountaintops!!

Another stop...we can now see the Upper Arrow Lake...

Bob wasn’t going to let this obstacle get in our way...out comes the chainsaw!!

It almost looks like the clearcuts on the mountainsides are letters that should spell something...just not sure what language it is though...
So many incredible views...

There is the highway down below with the entrance to McDonald Creek Provincial Park...we could see it but we just could not find the right road...

A bit of a ditch on the road...

We had an awesome day of riding...stopping many times to admire the views, chat with Bob and Carol, enjoy the snacks Carol had packed...and, of course, give Shamus a break from his riding spot on the floor of the side-by-side by Carol’s feet.
It was close to 4:30 by the time we arrived back home.  We loaded the quads back into the truck and then with a drink in hand, we walked over to Bob and Carol’s to have “cocktail hour” with them.  After visiting with them for an hour or so, we went home for dinner.  Quite a breeze had come up and it had become really chilly so we actually had the fireplace on while I made dinner.
After dinner and dishes, we went for a walk around the campground.  It had really filled up with new campers arriving today.  We chatted with our neighbours, Fleming and his wife Marilyn before heading inside for the evening.  With all the fresh air and riding today...followed by a couple of glasses of wine...I was absolutely exhausted!
