Tuesday, January 17 to Monday, January 23, 2023 (La Posa South LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ)

After the big storm we had last night, on our walk Tuesday (Jan. 17) morning we found lots of puddles and evidence of water flows. It certainly will keep the dust down for awhile.

We had both old and new friends join us on the desert...yesterday, Dave and Cheryl (from Alberta) arrived and today, Dave's brother, Brian and his wife, Debbie (that makes 4 "Debbie's" here now) pulled in. They are from Manitoba. So our group is growing!

We all gathered at Ray and Deb's for happy hour and enjoyed great conversation as everyone got to know each other. Left to right, around the circle (okay, oval LOL)...Brian, Debbie (#4), Cheryl, Dave, Steve, Jerry, Debbie (#3), Jim (with Buddy), Deb (#1), Ray, Debbie (#2), and Greg...
Deb, Ray, Debbie, Greg, Marilyn and Colan...and that completes our "gang"...
Our sunset tonight...
Wednesday (Jan. 18) was a cool day with temperatures in the upper 50's F/mid teens Celsius but it was sunny with a light breeze from the northwest.

Deb made one of Steve's favourites, "Monkey Bread". She had a couple of failed attempts because of the difference between her microwave in the motorhome compared to the one at home, but after lunch, she had success and invited us, and those that were home, over for a taste...delicious! A teaser pic for Mr. Roche cause he loves it too, and he's not here! 😋
We decided to gather at 3:30 today for Core Crash. Our group of 12...the only one missing is Deb (#1) as her foot has been giving her some grief, so she decided to stay home with it up. Debbie #4 was up!
Thursday (Jan. 19) morning there was virtually no wind so Steve decided to go "out back" and fly his RC plane. For a change, I thought I would join him and get some pictures and videos...
Ready for take off...

A short 1:32 minute video...
It was good he got out flying when he did because by late morning the wind had come up again.

At 4:00 we headed over to Ray and Deb's for happy hour and dinner...
She cooked a pork roast on the barbeque...
I helped with the side dishes. Deb had everything prepped, and I followed her instructions...stir!
Our host and hostess...dinner is ready!
Fried rice and stir-fry veggies along with the pork roast...Delicious!!
Not the best selfie...
Friday (Jan. 20) was another cool day but still sunny! Today we went with Greg and Debbie on a tour through the Imperial Dam Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) an area they've never been, then Yuma. Before touring the camping area we took a drive along the Senator Wash Reservoir to a rest area...
Then we continued on Senator Wash Road...
...to T.K. Jones Campground on Squaw Lake...
Then headed towards the LTVA area...
The best camping areas appear to be on the other side of the reservoir but the roads are rough....
We find this LTVA rather baron looking unless you have a view of the reservoir or a waterfront site...

One bonus though is you are only about 35 minutes from Yuma for shopping and restaurants...
We headed down Imperial Dam Road passing by Laguna Dam...
Fish and Chips for all at Lute's Casino in Yuma...one of our favourite spots and a first for Greg and Debbie...
Too funny...
After lunch we went to the Arizona Market and wandered around there for a good hour or so. Then it was onto Martha's Garden...Debbie wanted to buy some dates, and of course, we had to have date shakes...another first for Greg and Debbie!
After a quick stop at Fry's to pick up a couple of things, we completed the "circle tour" and were back home just before 5:30. A great day! Thanks for driving, Greg!

Saturday (Jan. 21) morning was the start of the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation and RV Show. Debbie and I were at the laundromat at about 9:30 and figured that everyone had gone to the Show because it wasn't too busy. Mind you, the owner had told me that Saturday is one of their slower days...so it could be that too. All I know is that the laundromat is usually an absolute "zoo" with the influx of people here to attend the Show. (They claim between 750,000 to a million people arrive here in the winter!) So we were pleasantly surprised...especially since we wanted to use the dryers too. It's just been too cold and windy to trust putting the clothes on the line.

I snapped some pictures on our way home...yup, its busy! This is approaching Kuehn Road. On the left is "The Big Tent" where the Show is (on the southside of Kuehn Road)...on the right (or northside of Kuehn Road) is Tyson Wells, filled with vendors...
Traffic gets really backed up...mainly because of drivers turning onto Kuehn Road blocking the road once the light turns red...
Motorhomes for sale...
Folks parking along the edge of La Posa West LTVA along the highway...
Traffic backed up passed La Posa North LTVA and half-way to La Posa South!
Deb and Ray hosted a potluck tonight. To take advantage of the sun, we all gathered at 3:00 for an early dinner. Debbie (#3) with Deb arranging the food dishes on the table. Jerry sitting to the right, Ray behind and Steve (behind the bush), Debbie (#2), Greg and Cheryl on the left. Colan and Marilyn are away on a cruise for a week so missed this gathering.

After our tummies were full, we brought out Core Crash...Jerry was up...
Deb bundled up...yes, it was a little chilly!
Sunday (Jan. 22) and another cold start to the day at 34F/1C. A hard freeze warning was issued for this morning, and tomorrow. The daytime temperatures have been and will remain for the next week in the 50's/mid teens Celsius. However, if you are in the direct sun, out of the wind, it really isn't bad out. This seems to be the the coldest winter we've ever had here!

Debbie, Greg, Steve and I went to the "PowWow" being held at the QIA. In all of the years that Steve and I have been coming to Q, this is the first time at the PowWow. It is a huge gathering with vendors from all over the world selling just about everything imaginable made with rocks, gems and minerals. The vendors are setup inside and outside the QIA building,

We decided to try out the Horney Toade Saloon for lunch. Last year they were located on the east side of Kuehn Road but this year have moved to Main Street. The service was slow but our meals were good.
Since there is a wind warning for tomorrow, the gang got together for Core Crash and happy hour this afternoon at our place. More great fun but we had to cut the last game short because it was just getting too cold and windy! The wind was to start at 5:00...I think it was a little early!

Monday (Jan. 23) started out cold...and windy! The wind had actually been howling all night with gust apparently up to 58 mph. We don't have a weather station to monitor wind speed but it was definitely windy...and it continued all day.

Consequently, it was an inside day. We did battle the wind and cold just after 10:00 to go over to Deb and Ray's for freshly baked banana/chocolate chip muffins and coffee...thanks Deb!

Other than that we were inside...Steve edited pictures while I did some knitting. Once he was finished that, he turned on the TV (thank goodness for the sunshine keeping our batteries charged!) and I worked on this blog update.

As we were sitting here, the fridge started beeping...out of propane! So off Steve went into town to fill the tank. When he got back, he pumped the black tank, ready for dumping first thing in the morning at day break. With it being so busy here now you have to be early or wait to dump in very long lineups, and Steve has two trips to make.

Just after 4:00 we joined Deb and Ray outside against their rig, out of the wind for happy hour. We enjoyed an hour in the sunshine before calling it evening.

And that's it...we are all caught up again!

Sunday, January 8 to Monday, January 16, 2023 (La Posa South LTVA, Quartzsite, AZ)

We had another beautiful sunrise Sunday (Jan. 8) morning...there is no lack of gorgeous sunrises and sunsets this year!
The wind was calm today...a rarity so far this season, so Steve took his plane out to the desert behind us and managed a few successful flights.
When he got back, it was still calm, so he took up his glider out front...it's up there somewhere!
I started my day with a 5 km/ 3mile walk and after showering and dishes, worked on a blog update. The videos Steve takes with his drone seem to take forever to upload to YouTube! I know that it is starting to get busy here so the internet is not going to be as fast, but the uploading of these videos have always taken a lot of time...and gigs! Oh well...they are really cool!

At 4:00, the gang gathered for more games of Core Crash...always fun! Deb(1), Ray, Jerry, Debbie(2), Steve, Marilyn, with Debbie(3) taking her turn. I have numbered all of the Debbies based on the order I have met them, LOL!
Jerry's turn to throw...
Monday (Jan. 9) morning Steve and I got out for a walk and then since we had another calm start to the day, he took his plane back out to the desert for another few flights.

That afternoon, Greg/Debbie, Jim, Marilyn, Steve and I rode our 4-wheelers into town to check out the RV's. It's already getting very busy in town, so taking the quads/sidexsides in is the best mode of transportation. We rode in on the trails and parked them in the wash off Kuehn Street. Even though the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation and RV Show doesn't start until January 21, the assortment of trailers, 5th-wheels and motorhomes are open for viewing. And it's the best time to take a look at them before it gets too busy! All of us were in agreement that the favourite 5th wheel floor plan was the Grand Design Solitude 390RK.

Afterwards we stopped at Beer Belly's Adult Day Care for a brew before heading home!
Live music was being playing...very loud live music, LOL!
Well, our couple of calm days ended on Tuesday (Jan. 10). Although sunny, the wind was coming from  the south which meant the awning and sunshade had to come down...and no protection from the trailer to sit outside.

We all had parcels to pick up at Quiet Times, so Steve and I went with Greg and Debbie into town. One parcel was particularly heavy at 100 lbs...a new Cummins generator for Greg, so he would need Steve's help lifting it into the back of the truck. No more open frame Champion noise...thanks Greg! 😉

No Core Crash or happy hour outside today...it was just too windy!

Wednesday (Jan. 11) morning Steve left at 8:30 to go to the Quartzsite Desert Flyers meeting. He was back in less than 2 hours after running a couple of errands as well.

After lunch we headed out to do some geocaching...Greg/Debbie and Colan/Marilyn joined us. Debbie and I recording our find...'The Cabin'...
Another one...
I almost slipped down an embankment getting this one!
I didn't like the looks of the hill for the next one so waited below...
After finding the geocache they came back down...
We searched high and low for this geocache...'Q Mtn Mill Site'...but we couldn't find it. We will have to return another day and give it another try.
Great view from up here! Our rigs are in the distance somewhere...
Colan and Marilyn still searching...
The big show tent in the distance was set up a few days ago...
View of the mine site from below...
We were home by 3:30...plenty of time to prepare for Core Crash! It was nice that it wasn't too windy to get together with everyone and play!

Not a spectacular sunset tonight...but still pretty!
Thursday (Jan. 12) was a sunny day with the breeze coming from the north for a change. We had a pretty laid-back day...we sat outside, Steve reading and I was knitting.

Jerry has a very cool hobby...Astronomy, and has numerous telescopes for viewing stars and planets. It was a nice sunny day, so Jerry set up his special telescope for viewing the sun.

Steve here...if I remember correctly the tripod has counterweights so a variety of telescope sizes can be used and is motorized for tracking images. Jerry uses a small hand held computer to set up whatever inputs are required for star gazing. Using a special filter for viewing the sun we were able to see black  sun spots and solar flares. Very cool! Once we have a cloudless evening Jerry has invited all of us over for some star gazing.
At 4:00 we all gathered for happy hour at our place and enjoyed great conversation before calling it a night about an hour and a half later. Left to right...Ray, Marilyn (Colan arrived a little later), Deb, Jerry, Debbie, Greg, Debbie and Steve...
Friday (Jan. 13)...and another relaxing day. We both pretty much had a repeat of yesterday...knitting and reading. The only difference was that it was a cloudy day.

Today we switched it up a bit for happy hour...Ray and Deb brought out their ladder-ball game along with corn-hole.

We played a bunch of ladder-ball. Steve and Jerry...
...and then switched over to corn-hole. Ray taking his shot...
Jerry and Ray...
Saturday (Jan. 14) morning...another beautiful sunrise...
However, it was a cool windy day with the wind coming from south (again!)...there is also rain in forecast tonight.

Steve and I went into Quartzsite to watch the Hi Jolly Daze Parade...The parade honors Hadji Ali, a Syrian camel trainer who was part of a U.S. Army experiment of using camels in the Southwestern Desert.

Waiting for the parade to start...lots of people lined the road!

Honour Guard...
Arizona Sunriders OHV Club...
Hope we never need one of these...
Pacific Northwest Camel Company. Camel rides are available in town...
Quartzsite Camel Corps Car...
Quartzsite Camel Corps dog dressed as a camel...

Quartzsite Roadrunners Gem and Mineral Club...
Don't recall what these guys were all about, Shriners perhaps...

I believe these are for sale in town...
Didn't recognize our friend Bob Stewart (Prince George ATV Club) who was dressed in a mountain man outfit until he was announced...

Russ from RVerTV filming the crowd. We've watched many of his YouTube videos, especially during COVID...
It was the first time we have gone to watch the parade in all of the years we have been coming here. A small, well done parade and wonderful seeing such community spirit.

Sunday (Jan. 15) was another cloudy, windy day. The weather forecasters had been right...it rained throughout the night.

Greg and Steve went to the Gun Show...dropping Debbie and I off to check out new vendors.

Steve here...We paid our $10 entry fee and were asked if we had any weapons to check in. Told her nope...we're Canadian!😉Lots of guns and accessories, many of which aren't allowed in Canada, ammo, knives, stun guns, and believe it or not...bullet proof vests!

I really liked the colourful stocks and barrels on these custom made rifles...

It was quite busy but didn't take us long to check everything out. As we walked back to the truck I took this picture for our grandson Isaac who loves dinosaurs...
About an hour later Greg and Steve picked us up. It's amazing how quickly the vendors and people have poured in! Quartzsite is getting very, very busy!

Today is Greg's birthday, so we thought we'd all go out for dinner at Silly Al's. Ray, Jerry and Debbie (Deb still had a bit of a cough so didn't think she should go) headed out early and found that Silly Al's had a 2 to 3 hour wait...and this was at 4:15! Ray called us to let us know...so we changed plans and suggested trying the Yacht Club. They had room for the 9 of us out on the enclosed patio. Inside was very lively with Karaoke...and very loud!

On the back of the menu is a little history of The Yacht Club (thanks for the picture, Debbie#2)...
Left to right, around the table...Jerry, Debbie, me, Steve, Greg, Debbie, Ray, Colan and Marilyn...
We all had a great time...food was good and the company even better!

It rained through the night again and Monday (Jan. 16) morning we woke to another cool, windy day. Actually cool temperatures and wind are in the forecast over the next week.

Debbie and I spent the day in Parker grocery shopping...that time again, another 2 weeks have gone by! While I was gone, Steve took care of a few chores around here and was reading when we got back.

About 8:00 one heck of a storm come through....with major wind and heavy rain. Apparently there had also been thunder and lightning 11 km/7 miles away but with our blinds closed and the home theatre booming as we watched America's Got Talent, we didn't see or hear any of it!

It should be interesting tomorrow morning to see how much water has pooled!
