Monday, January 31, 2011 (Fort Pickens, Pensacola, FL)

We woke up to the sound of pitter-patter on the roof this morning...but the rain didn’t last long. It did remain cloudy and windy all day, though.

Well, today really wasn’t a very exciting day. We had a very leisurely start to the day and then after exercises, showers and breakfast, we headed out to Pensacola Beach to do some laundry.

We were back home around 1:30 and after some lunch, we decided to go out for a walk. We went to the beach on the other side of the island (the Pensacola Bay side)...

...then carried on around the campground and going on the trail to the day-use area...and the ruins of another Gun Battery...

I forgot to mention after talking to our  neighbours along with another couple in the campground, that the Island was really hit hard by the hurricane in 2005...apparently there was a 30 foot water surge that devastated the park.  The campground used to be fully treed, and is now reduced to scrub and dead trees.  But they have been working hard to repair it.  The beaches were also washed away and they had to bring in a special ship that basically suctioned the sand from the ocean floor and pumped it back onto the beach where D9 Cats had to spread it.

We continued our walk deciding to go down to the beach (Gulf of Mexico one)...the BP employees were down there....
Gotta love the outhouse they carry with them...

And that was basically our day...
