Friday, November 12, 2010 (Fort McAllister State Park, Richmond Hill, GA)

We woke to clear sunny skies again this morning. It’s chilly first thing but does warm up nicely as the day progresses. Not hot, mind you, but very pleasant...low 70’s. I assumed my morning spot...my recliner with my laptop and a cup of coffee.

The morning went by very fast...after our exercises, breakfast and cleanup, it was just after 11:30 by the time we headed out. We were just going back to the park entrance to go through the museum and fort; then for a hike.

After paying our $5 each, we sat down to watch a short introductory video and then it was onto the museum...and tons of reading! But it was actually very interesting learning more about the Civil War and what lead up to it; the affect it had on the local people; and the events that occurred in this area. Fort McAllister was built by the Confederates and taken by the Union Army in what is known as General Sherman’s last run...he lead his army from Atlanta down to Savannah. Well, that’s the gist of it but obviously there was much, much more information about it...starting with why and how the Fort was built.

After the museum, we took the self guided tour of the Fort...the bunkers are all built of sand and earth, looking like big mounds. It’s hard to explain, so here are some pictures along with the link to their website....... http://www.gastateparks.org/item/120698

This is where they heat up the cannon balls until they are red-hot and then fire at the ships...
Inside one of the bunkers...

A 10-inch Mortar...

By the time we finished our tour, it was after 2:30 and time for our hike. We were taking the 3 mile loop from the park entrance that goes through the salt marsh to an observation deck and some backcountry camping sites.

View from the observation deck...
On the return loop, I was in the lead and as I turned a corner, there was an Armadillo! We weren’t sure whether it was an Armadillo or an Aardvark but I googled it when we got back and determined it was an Armadillo. Anyway, it scared the crap out of me! But it certainly didn’t give a darn about us...it had its nose buried in the leaves hunting for insects.

We had a great walk...and afternoon...and were back home just before 4:30. Time to get a campfire going. We sat enjoying our happy hour until it was time to cook dinner (much earlier than the night before). After dinner, we watched a movie...I managed to stay away for this one!
