Friday, October 24, 2014 (Travel to Bullards Beach State Park, Bandon, Oregon)

We pulled out of Carl G Washburne State Park just before 9:45 this morning. It was cloudy as we finished our pack-up and it started raining as we hit the road...figures! We were hoping for a reprieve this morning...no such luck.

This tunnel had us a little concerned the other day...our GPS said that we were too high to go through and all we saw as we passed road construction and rounded the corner in heavy rain was a sign that said 11'6". Steve made a snap decision taking the only exit that happened to lead into the Heceta Head Lighthouse parking. We later spoke to Jim, the camphost and he said that we would be fine...it's over 14'. He was right...the shoulder is 11'6", the rest is 14'6"...whew!

The bridge over the Siuslaw River in Florence...

...and views from the bridge...

It was a pretty yucky travel day, so I only took a few pictures...as the windshield wipers cleared the windshield...

The bridge in the distance is the one that goes over the entrance to Coos Bay and into North Bend, before hitting the city of Coos Bay...it was being closed...

So we ended up taking the detour route around the bay, along a very narrow, very windy road that often had signs that said slow to 15 mph. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures...I was too busy staying out of Steve's way so that he could watch the side mirrors on both sides! This side trip added about 30 stressful minutes to our travels.

I believe this is the bridge over Coos River...

Almost back to the highway! However, we missed one confusing corner after this detour photo and ended up having to find a spot to turn around.

It was about 12:15 when we pulled into Bullards Beach State Park...in the pouring rain. After driving A and C loops (B was closed), we settled on site C8. We managed to get backed in with no problems, and it was even level! So after putting the stabilizers down, we got the slides out and went inside. We'll eat lunch and hopefully by the time we finish, the rain will have let up. No such luck there...Steve ended up putting on his rain gear. Since we were level front to back (as well as side to side), we decided to not bother unhitching today...but we got everything else set up, though. It's a good sized site with full hookups (including 50 amp electrical) and the off-season rate is $24/night. We latched onto a satellite signal fairly easily and our Verizon hotspot also has good reception...yay!

We basically settled in for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Steve had a lot of pictures to edit and I had some catching up to do on our blog. Just in time for American Thanksgiving :-) this fellow came around into our yard. It reminded me of Hawaii five years ago. There had been a bunch of wild turkeys wandering around our condo on the Big Island...remember that, Mike and Nadine??

  1. the rain seems to be following the two of you as you venture southward..
the first time we went through that tunnel we were forewarned..stay to the middle and you will be fine..although we did take the Heceta turnoff..had to venture to the back parking lot to turn around!
