Friday, November 16, 2018 (City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico)

We didn't get a chance to see Leslie and Mark after they got home last night...and they are leaving today, so we popped over to say "hi and bye" to them and, of course, Yogi and Maci (their dogs). Mark was our tour guide last year at Karchner Caverns, and we were surprised to find out they were our neighbour at the RV Dreams Boondocking Rally last season. Too bad we didn't get a chance to catch up with you...perhaps our paths will cross again! Enjoy your winter!

Then it was time to head off with Leslie and Dave for a hike up to the top of Table Mountain...
We're going up to that far peak...
A beautiful day for a hike! Looking back at the City of Rocks...
 A lone tree...
 Incredible views!
 A water break...
Poor Margaret was slowing down...time for her to go in the backpack...

Up and up!
The trail takes you a fair distance away from the City of Rocks before turning back...
Then the trail takes you closer......
Then further away again...
Top of the ridge comes into view...

We're almost at the top...the last part of the trail gradually gets steeper, with more large rocks. I'm ahead of Dave...
Once at the top Steve switched to his telephoto lens. Our rig is second from the right top, and Dave and Leslie's is second from the right bottom...

A little rest once at the top...
 And of course, a selfie...

River valley below on the opposite side...
Indian grinding holes called Mortars...
Heading back down...the trail we took below is barely visible...
The trail follows along the top of that ridge line...
 Almost down...

 Main campground...
Steve took a couple of rock porn pics...LOL!

Once down the mountain, we decided to take a different trail home...which ended up adding considerable mileage to our already tired bodies! But we made it and 3 1/2 hours later we were back home...total hike about 5 miles/8 kms. Absolutely fabulous!

The electric/water sites are very spacious. We chose these because the overnight temps were suppose to go below freezing so we wanted to run our electric heaters...
I gladly sat down at the picnic table to take off my boots...
Yup...that's where we hiked! The highest peak...
We relaxed with a bottle of water, had showers and then just chilled for the rest of the afternoon...until it was time to go over to Dave and Leslie's for happy hour and dinner. We tried to sit outside but decided it was too chilly so we went inside.

We had a fabulous dinner! Pooling our resources, the guys barbecued steak which was accompanied with baked potatoes, salad...and, of course, mushrooms for the steak! Delicious!

The evening ended after playing a few games of Rummikub...Leslie won 2 and I won one...girls still rule!

  1. The rock formations remind me of Joshua Tree NP. We will get there some day.

    1. The rock formations look so out of place there when it’s such an open area.
