Saturday, November 17, 2018 (City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico)

We woke to another beautiful sunny day...just a tad bit cool in the morning with overnight temperatures going down near freezing.

We researched where to go after leaving Kartchner Caverns (our next stop). Dave and Leslie came over and we discussed options...finally deciding to try to get into Gilbert Ray County Campground. It is a first come, first serve campground just outside of Tucson. While we were at it, we made reservations for Catalina State Park and Picacho Peak State Park. We seem to be experiencing a lot more difficulty getting reservations in state parks this year...more so than in previous years.

After that was all taken care of, we decided to walk up to the Visitors Center and watch a video about the formation of City of Rocks. It was an old VHS recording that had seen better days.

Walking back home to have lunch...
After we had all had a bite to eat, we headed out in Dave and Leslie's truck...a short drive up to Observation Point. There is a geocache up here...for some reason, we keep forgetting to look for them! The only time we think about them is when we are Quartzsite...
It's a little windy up here!

When we got back home, we decided to go exploring the City of Rocks...there aren't really many trails around the rocks, you just go wherever...very cool!

That dark mound on top of the hill is Observation Point...
Leslie and I chose a different path...
Dave...

 Chill-axing on the rocks...

  And of course....another group selfie!

This boulder looks like it's resting on 3 stones...
Indian grinding hole called a Mortar beside it...

It's amazing how this tree has survived in mostly rock...

 Flat Top in the distance...
Almost missed this spot that looks like a cave...
Would make a nice shelter...
Visitor Center in the distance...
Such a cool area....we would love to spend another few days here but we have reservations at Kartchner Caverns.

We chilled for awhile, did a little work on the blog, and next thing we knew, it was happy hour. Rather than even try to sit outside today, we decided to just stay in...it cools down so fast in the late afternoon. After a couple of hours chatting about our adventures, we called it an evening..time to get dinner going.

We ended the day relaxing in front of the TV...another great day!

  2. That's funny, we always forget about geocaches when traveling as well. The grinding holes are really cool, they only other ones we have seen were the ones you showed us in Quartzsite.

  4. I love the drive just over the border from NM to AZ. Those borders south of the freeway just as you enter AZ need to have a State Park!
