Wednesday, November 21, 2018 (Travel to Gilbert Ray County Park, Tucson, AZ)

We pulled out of our site just before 9:00 and headed to the sani-dump...as we did last year, we drove all of the way down to the big parking lot to turn around so we could approach the dump from the other direction. It's a bit too tight for us on the other side.

Once finished, we had to drive though the campground and met Dave and Leslie back at the sani-dump. A few minutes later we were on our way out of Kartchner Caverns State Park and heading toward Interstate 10 west.

After quite the roller-coaster ride along a narrow twisty road that goes into the park, we arrived at Gilbert Ray Campground at about 10:30. As we pulled in, a staff truck was leaving, so Steve asked what sites would be best for a couple of rigs our size...he immediate said sites C19 and 20. We took that into consideration but decided to take a drive through the other loops...so we parked our rig in the registration area and jumped in with Dave and Leslie. After a tour through loop A, we found it quite full and most sites left open were small and the road narrow, so we decided we'd better take the advice of the staff and check out C-loop and sites 19 and 20. They were right...we took site 19 and Dave and Leslie, site 20. The sites have 30 amp electric hookup, no water or sewer...however, there are water spigots throughout the campground and a sani-dump. There happened to be a water spigot right across the road from us, so before getting situated in our site we ran a hose over to it and filled up with water.
It was a beautiful warm, sunny day, so the guys took the bicycles off the back of the trailers and we all went for a bike ride around the campground...stopping at the registration kiosk to pay ($20/night).

We joined Dave and Leslie in the shade at their site and toasted our new location...
And as the sun went down, it got pretty chilly out, so we went inside for dinner.  Steve tried to capture the beauty of the moon rise over the mountains but it didn't turn out in the photo...
The guys grilled chicken and Leslie had made a fabulous Greek salad...yummy!
After dinner we all went to our place to watch Survivor (it's Wednesday!) and then FBI...the end to a beautiful day in this beautiful park.

    1. The paved road getting there is very windy, rough and narrow but worth it. Not a lot of large sites and you can’t reserve so you take your chances. It’s very nice though.

  2. Nice that you were able to get sites right next to each other!

  3. Gilbert Ray was a fantastic stop, those two sites were another "meant to be " moment just like City of Rocks. The road in/out was interesting for sure, thought we might drag the tail of the rig on some of those dips! Of course it wasn't that bad.

    1. It was an interesting trip in on that road...I was getting worried that we had accidentally taken the wrong one!

  4. Love the park! I remember how difficult it was to get into the dump there. Lucky to get two sites next to each other! We checked it out before getting to Dustin's Diamond J, but it was full mid-week as we figured.

    1. We’ve heard so much about this park...glad we finally made it there. Yep...sanidump isn’t exactly big rig friendly. I swear some campgrounds were designed by people that have never driven an RV!
