Sunday, November 18, 2018 (Travel to Kartchner Caverns State Park, Arizona)

Unfortunately we have to leave this beautiful, peaceful place today. Another couple of days would have been nice...but we have reservations at Kartchner Caverns State Park, another beautiful spot.

We pulled out around 10:00 and followed Dave and Leslie to the 5R Travel Center, a nice Valero truck stop that was on our route to I-10.
We both fuelled up with diesel and dumped our tanks at the free sani-dump...and then hit the interstate west.

Here are pictures I took along the way....
This marsh looks out of place in the desert...

We pulled into Kartchner Caverns State Park at 2:30 and made our way to site #60.
When we made reservations, there were very few sites available, so without much to choose from, we picked 2 back-in sites that looked fairly close to each other. We were hoping that the site we had last year would be available...it was a nice long, easy access back-in site. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Site 60 was on an interior loop and had huge tree on the other side of the road, making it a real challenge to get into. But Steve managed to manoeuvre back into it with the help of the campground host (in the site next to us) who held branches out of the way.

Once in, we had to level off side-to-side...the driver's side had to be propped up quite a bit. It always amazes us that campgrounds, especially with paved pads, can be so unlevel. At least Steve was able to level front-to-back by letting air out of  the trucks rear air bags, so we didn't have to unhitch.

After we both were all set up, Dave and Leslie came over and we toasted our new location. We spent a couple of hours chatting and then they headed home. We're looking forward to a couple of days here...we won't be touring the caverns since we were here last year, but wanted Dave and Leslie to see it since they really enjoyed Carlsbad Caverns.

  1. You got pictures of our rig I didn't know about, kinda cool! It was sort of sad to leave City of Rocks but we can always go back another day. Kartchner State Park was great too though your site was a little "squeaky" to get into. So glad you knew about it and took us there.

    1. Would definitely go back to City of Rocks! Kartchner has one of our favourite campgrounds...if you can get a site in the outer loop.
