Tuesday, October 17, 2017 (Travel to Virgin River Canyon BLM Campground, Littlefield, AZ)

We decided that we would break up our trip to Las Vegas into 2 days by stopping at one of our favourite campgrounds...Virgin River Canyon BLM Campground. Our drive today would be about 4 to 5 hours, so we got a fairly early start.

We saw a herd of deer in a field as we headed west on highway 24. I don't think we have ever seen so many together in one spot....
Dogs rounding up and herding the sheep...very cool...
It was another frosty start to the day...
The farmers were leaving their sprinklers running to stop them from freezing overnight...
Just missed the sign but we're coming down from a pass summit of well over 8000'

We decided to retrace our route and catch I-70 south at Richfield.... which intersects with I-15. We passed Koosharem Reservoir Recreation Site which also has a campground...

We climbed and climbed...elevation 7370 feet...
The colour in the mountains never ceases to amaze us...

Down we go...

We pulled over in a rest stop for lunch...

The bottom skirting, a wheel, and the H/W tank cover were missing on this side of the
trailer, so Steve walked over to find out what happened. The owners totalled their truck and rolled the trailer onto it's side in the ditch. Unbelievably it held together and was still in pretty good shape. He didn't know the fate of the owners but hopefully the're okay.
Just past St. George, we entered Arizona. I-15 leaves Utah, cutting through the upper northwest corner of Arizona before getting into Nevada...

Getting into the Virgin River canyon...

Yay...we're there!
Entering the campground loop and pay station area. $8 per night/$90 per month with flush toilets and sinks but no showers...
After setting up Steve went for a walk up top. That's our rig on the left...
We were surprised at how many campers were already there. We were unable to get our favourite site right along the canyon edge...but this one (site 71) will do...
Still has great views of the mountains. See that motorhome on the right?...that was the site we had last time we were here (October 2015)...

After doing a minimal set up since we are only here for one night, it was time to find some shade outside. We had to sit in front of the truck until the sun moved around. We've gone from freezing morning temps to 87F/31C...Yes!!

We stayed outside enjoying the view until the sun had gone down behind the mountains to the west. Such a lovely evening! The only negative on this visit was a guy running his twinned Honda generators on his small travel trailer non stop, even when he wasn't there, and a young couple playing their music (our kind of tunes) but still.... Maybe it was to drown out the generators. The views certainly made up for it though!

    1. Not any worse than the Hope Princeton or Coquihalla Bill.

  2. We will have to stop and stay at that campsite one day ... we originally would have come up from that way after staying at Cathedral Gorge, if we had not come across the border in Alberta instead of BC. Looks lovely.

    1. Great spot and the campground is far enough from the interstate that you hear very little road noise (just inconsiderate generator users)
