Wednesday, July 10, 2013 (Hi Country RV Park, Whitehorse, Yukon)

We had a much more relaxing start to the day today...well, other than doing our exercises, that is.  We headed out just after 10:00...this morning we have a few errands to run.  First of all, we went to drop off Steve's rifle at the gunsmith.  He is going to store it while we are in Alaska and since he is a gunsmith, he is also going to check it over for an erratic accuracy issue.

After that, we fuelled the truck up with diesel...$124.9/litre, one of the best prices we have seen!  With that job done, we headed to fill a propane tank and then we headed home for lunch.

One of the places that the fellow at the Visitors Centre recommended was Miles Canyon.  So that is where we are headed to this afternoon.  We drove along Schwatka Lake, seems to be the "airport" for the float planes.

We drove along a beautiful (but a little bumpy) road...with stunning views of the river below...

We pulled over at a view point overlooking Miles Canyon...

A suspension bridge...cool, we must go there!

We continued along and turned onto the road that goes down to the Miles Canyon hiking area.  There is quite a variety of trails once you cross over the suspension bridge. We had no idea there were hiking trails here! We parked the truck in a large pull-out area before the actual parking lot.  There is a warning sign indicating that it is a dead end road with limited parking and turnaround. This is a picture taken from the cliff near where we parked the truck...

Looks like we just may be going for a hike this afternoon!

We will be taking the Upper Canyon Trail to the old Canyon City Townsite...you can see the trail on the left in this picture...

Absolutely spectacular views!

There were lots of people on the trails this afternoon...

There was one particularly steep climb...

We made it...

Can Middens....(a nice name for dump)

The indentations in the ground are where various buildings used to be.

Roadhouse site...
NWMP site...

This is as far as we went...after wandering around the area trying to figure out where the buildings would have been, we decided to back track along the river instead of continuing along the loop trail through the forest...

Once back at the bridge, we continued a little way on the other side...

A float plane flew over just after we had crossed the bridge...

I have no idea how far we hiked...there are not distance markers at all...but we were gone just shy of 2 hours.  It was a great hike on a beautiful day!

A couple of shots on our way back along the river/lake...

The dam in the background...

It was shortly after 4:00 when we arrived back home.  We sat outside in the sunshine for a bit and then went inside.  We were planning on leaving tomorrow but a look at the forecast made us think differently.  Lots of rain is expected to come in tonight and stay until later tomorrow afternoon, so we will stay another night.  That is just as well...I am trying desperately to get the blog up-to-date before we leave Friday...who knows when we are going to have internet service again!
