Friday, July 12, 2013 (Travel to Congdon Creek Campground, Kluane Lake, Yukon)

We're on the road again!  It was a gorgeous sunny morning as we continued on the Alaska Highway...

...and the start of lumpy patches along the highway...

This is the original Aishihik bridge that was rebuilt in 1923 by the Jacquot brothers when they upgraded the road. In the 1940s, the crossing was incorporated into the Alaska Highway route by the United States Public Roads Administration (US PRA) surveying crew.

However, the US PRA decided to build a more permanent steel bridge nearby that could support heavier loads, leaving the original timber bridge in place. (This steel bridge was replaced in 1968 by the Department of Public Works Canada.)

Unfortunately, the clouds are getting thicker as we head northwest...but the mountains are spectacular...

We stopped at the Haines Junction Visitors Information Centre...that is housed in a beautiful new building along with the Kluane National Park Reserve Information Centre...

As we were walking into the centre, a couple in stopped us saying "long time no see"  they had met us two years ago when we were in Nakusp, BC...Murray and Donna recognized our truck; unfortunately, we didn't recognize them, at first, but the more we talked, they became familiar. That is about the fourth time people have stopped and talked to us saying that they recognize the truck.

After a brief stop to get info on Kluane Lake, we were soon back in the truck.  The mountains are beautiful...

Fly fishers on the Jarvis River...

Our first glimpse of Kluane Lake...

At approximately 400 km2 (150 sq mi), and 70 km (43 mi) long, it is the largest lake contained entirely within the Yukon territorial border...

The entrance to Congdon Creek Government Campground...

We backed into a perfect site right on the lake.  We realized that it is actually a double site, but we decided to stay "on one side".  It's a pretty narrow double site...only big enough for a couple of truck campers who know each other.  So we had plenty of room.  A great site and the price is right...$12/night.

A beautiful view of the lake (even though the satellite dish is in the way)...

...and free firewood...bonus!  Steve is getting ready for tonight's campfire...

View out our back window...

Campfire time...

After dinner our neighbours joined us around the campfire.  John and Kathleen are from Pennsylvania and after talking to them for a bit, realized that they also follow Howard and Linda Payne (RV-Dreams).  They had met them in Florida two years ago...small world!
