Tuesday, July 9, 2013 (Hi Country RV Park, Whitehorse, Yukon)

Well, today is "Museum Day"...there are actually 6 museums in Whitehorse (yes...6!).  We have no plans to visit all six...let's start with one and take it from there!

We were up and out bright and early this morning because Steve wanted to be at the barber at 9:00 to get it done and over with first thing.  He dropped me off at Walmart on the way so I could check it out.  It's amazing the number of RVs camped out in the Walmart parking lot...

It wasn't long, though, before Steve was back...there was already a line up, so he had an appointment at 9:50.  In the mean time he had stopped off at the RCMP to see if he could store his rifle with them before crossing into Alaska. He was given the name of a gunsmith in town to try. We don't normally travel with a gun but Steve was hoping to be successful in the Limited Entry moose hunt draw, then he would meet up with his group on our return south to the Prince George area in September. Unfortunately nobody in the group was successful in the draw.

I was basically done at Walmart...it wasn't a Super Walmart so they had very limited groceries.  Didn't you get everything you needed yesterday while at the Super Store, you ask?  Well, quite frankly, I wasn't at all impressed and had hoped to pick up a few more things at Walmart.  I didn't get everything I needed but I did get a few things.  I have to realize that we are up north now and things aren't as easily accessible.

After a quick stop next door at Canadian Tire to pick up bottled water that they had on sale, we headed back downtown so Steve could get his haircut...$26.00 for a haircut...the most he has ever paid. The other day another place quoted him $35.00!  I sat next door having a cup of coffee at Baked Café, a very popular spot.

With Steve having finally gotten his haircut, we were ready to go to the Yukon Transportation Museum.  It was back up on the highway next to the airport.

The worlds largest weather-vane is sitting out at the entrance...

We went inside, paid the admission fee...and started out tour.  Unfortunately, no flashes were allowed inside the museum...very bizarre...so the colour is off on our pics...

They had a very cool model train set depicting 'old Whitehorse'...

Interesting story...I'd like to see the movie...

Once finished inside, Steve took a few more picture outside...

And that concludes our tour of the Transportation Museum...it was interesting and very well done.

Now, onto the next museum...MacBride Museum of Yukon History...

We paid our admission, were given a self-guided tour map...and off we went.  We started in the Mining Courtyard where Sam McGee's Cabin was...

Next, we went back inside into the Yukon Mammals & Birds display...

Then to the Outdoor Courtyard...

...and into the Gold to Government Gallery...

Whitehorse gets its name from the White Horse Rapids on the Yukon River, which were a major obstacle on the Trail of '98 for prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush. The frothing rapids were said to resemble the manes of white, charging horses. With the construction of the Whitehorse hydro-electric dam in 1958, the rapids were covered by the Schwatka Lake reservoir.

 Steve at the bar...

We continued outside to the North-West Mounted Police Cabin...

It was another very well done museum...but after two museums, we were tired.  It felt so good to get back to the truck and sit down!

Still a little more to see...and still time left in the afternoon, we drove across the bridge to the Whitehorse Fish Ladder and Dam.  It is the longest wooden fish ladder in the world.

Grayling fish...it's still too early for the salmon...

After checking out the information centre, we went outside to see the fish ladder...

This is a First Nations Fish Trap that was on display inside a kiosk along the pathway...

Then we went for a walk up to the dam...

And this is from beside the top of the dam...Schwatka Lake...

We were finished our sightseeing for today, so we headed home to relax, have dinner and then get ready to go to the Frantic Follies Vaudeville Revue

The show starts at 8:30 with rush seating when the doors open at 8:00.  So we left at about 7:40 to drive downtown to the Westmark Whitehorse Hotel.  After parking the truck in a lot a few block from the hotel, we walked the short distance...Steve took this picture of a rather unique building...

Once in the theatre (well actually it was a banquet room in the hotel), we had to move a few times because the seats aren't tiered enough so if someone tall sat in front of you, it was difficult to see the stage.  But  alas...the show started...

This was hilarious...she came into the audience, up our isle, and picked a fellow just in front of Steve.  I thought she was coming to drag Steve up onto the stage...and I think Steve thought the same!

Playing a tune using wood saws and bows...

 Excellent violin players...

 She has a wonderful voice...

Another "volunteer" gathered from the audience...

With only a 10 minute break, the show was over at 10:30.  It was excellent...very entertaining!  Such a talented group of performers!

Well, after such a full day...we headed straight to bed as soon as we got home...we'd had a great day!
