Saturday, November 9, 2013 (Sunset Campground, Furnace Creek, Death Valley National Park, CA)

Another beautiful day...we certainly aren't getting tired of this!  This morning we are going on another hike, a shorter one this time.  We are driving to Zabriskie Point where there is a lookout as well as a loop trail.

It was shortly after 10:00 when we arrived at the parking lot.  First of all, we are going to walk up to the viewpoint...behind me...

Wow...spectacular!

Looking back down at the parking lot...

Now it is time to get started on our hike...

Zabriskie Viewpoint is in the background...

We hiked the other side of that peak the other day...on the Golden Canyon Trail...

Oh Sheesh! Not another narrow trail with a steep drop-off on one side. I really had to talk myself into this one...but I did it...

Zabriskie Viewpoint way up there...

A couple of hours and 3 miles later, we were back from where we started. Yes, I doubted you Steve! You see, at one point I really didn't think he knew where the trail went once we got down to the fork in the trail at the wash. But he was right (there...I said it!). Steve here...I was what?

On the way home, we decided to check out the other two campgrounds in the area.  First of all, we drove through Furnace Creek Campground. They take reservations at this campground and have some full hook-up sites. These sites are not paved...

While the dry sites are paved...

We drove by the entrance to Furnace Creek Ranch...

The chairs are being set up in preparation for bands playing tonight...part of the 49ers Celebrations.

This is the upper level of Texas Springs Campground...no hook-ups here and no generators allowed...

Interesting rock formations...

View of our campground in the distance from Texas Springs Campground...there are several levels in this campground...

Once home, we relaxed for a bit...this is the view of the overflow area from our site...

This is the view out our back window....Furnace Creek Inn is in the distance...between the motorhome and washroom facility...

While Steve got to work on putting 10 gallons of water into the trailer, I went across to the visitors centre to use their WiFi.  I was anxious to find out from our son, Chris, how things went last night...he was proposing to his girlfriend, Angela. All went well...the wedding is planned for next September...very exciting!  We are very happy for them both and are looking forward to "officially" welcoming Angela into our family.

Steve was just finishing up when I got back.  We decided to hitch up in preparation for leaving tomorrow and then walked across the highway to Corkscrew Saloon at Furnace Creek Ranch for a beer...(Note the 20 Mule Team picture.)

Outdoor fire pits...
The sun is going down...

We decided to stay another night and leave on Monday.  It will be busy tomorrow at the sani-dumps and on the roads as many RVs will be leaving with the end of the 49ers Celebrations.

  1. Another wonderful hike! By looking at the area in the photos, this looks like the type area you could just hike forever and do your own trail discovery. I love that kind of day!

Congratulations to your son and soon to be daughter in law:)
