Saturday, November 2, 2013 (Travel to Walmart, Fernley, Nevada)

We had a good sleep in our little corner of the Walmart parking lot...much better than I was expecting considering we were parked near the delivery bays where we figured semi's would be coming and going all night long.

Steve took pictures of our overnight camping spot this morning, before we headed off...

We were trying to outrun the storms that were forecast so decided to continue further south on the I-5 to Sacramento and then connect with the I-80 heading northeast through the mountains to Reno.  Our destination for today is another Walmart parking lot either in Fernley or Fallon, Nevada.

As we were driving, we noticed the biggest flock of birds ever!  Although it's kind of hard to see, if you look closely, you can see them in this picture...

Acres and acres of agricultural land...

...a lot of it covered in water (not sure why)...

Sacramento River...

We stopped for lunch at a rest area just before Sacramento...

On the I-80...seven lanes going in each direction...yikes!

Auburn, California...

It wasn't long before we started climbing...

...and started seeing snow along the side of the highway...then noticed that the 'chains must be carried by trucks' signs had already been posted...Oops!

Donner Summit...

We stopped at the rest area....

Donner Lake...

Down...down...down we go...

The Truckee River parallels the highway for quite a distance...

Welcome to Nevada!

We passed through Reno (if you check last year's blog, you'll probably see the exact same picture!)...

Still the Truckee River....

Beautiful fall colours...

When we arrived in Fernley, we stopped at the Pilot/Flying J station to fuel up before continuing to Walmart.  Steve almost gave himself heart failure...he thought that he had accidently pumped $54.00 worth of (DEF) Diesel Exhaust Fluid into the tanks instead of diesel. Steve had never seen pumps like these before so he went inside to check with the clerk who confirmed that he had been pumping diesel. Whew!

Our parking spot at this Walmart was not quite as secluded as our spot last night...actually it was right on a main access road into the parking lot.  Oh well...it will work for an overnight stop.

  1. Glad you got over the Pass without heavy snow and needing chains....and are on your way for this year's adventure. Where are you heading? We are settling in for winter here and resettling after Ireland and Scotland - I am still feeling green!! Blessings and Love. Uncle Gord

  2. I hate seeing that white stuff when we are towing. But today we are getting a few snow fakes, not even enough to cover the grass. Hope we can head south soon.

  3. Guys - I think the water cover fields your saw above Sacramento are for rice. Keep having fun.
