It was close to noon when we decided to take a drive to the small town of Hope, about 26 miles from here. It had stopped raining and a little blue sky was starting to peak through as we drove 10 miles further down the highway to the junction with the Hope Highway.
Hope is a small village on the south shores of Turnagain Arm while the Seward Highway runs along the north side of the Arm.
We drove to the end of the road and didn't see much....hmmmm....that's it? We turned around and as we were driving back, we saw a sign and turned down a road. Ah...ha...the town is nestled back off the main road in the trees. We parked the truck on the side of the road and got out to walk....we had found "Main Street"...
This is the Social House, built in 1902...looks like something is happening there today...
We walked down to the end of the street where there is a small RV Park (way too small for us) and day-use area on the river. It's a very busy place this Saturday afternoon...
This fellow is cleaning his fish...
Lots of fish!
A very pretty spot...
After checking out the river, we walked back to the Bar...it's over a 100 years old and still operating...
Pretty small house...
We walked back to the truck and decided to drive along another one of Hope's few streets.
We came across the museum and decided to take a look...
After checking out the displays inside the small building, we went outside to walk around the rest of the outdoor displays. Steve and another fellow had a guided tour by an old fellow (I just wandered around by myself)...
Never seen a blue woodstove before...
The owner had moved all of these buildings here...
When we returned to the truck we discovered that we had both thought the elderly owner was part of the museum display the way he was sitting, hat, sunglasses and cane not moving and with a very pale complexion. Boy, did we have a good laugh! He is fairly blind because of a grinding accident but a good tour guide.
Our little trip to Hope was quite delightful, I'm glad we decided to go take a look. We stopped a number of times on the way back so Steve could take pictures...
The glacial silt along the shore looks innocent enough but it is apparently deadly. One step into it and your are stuck and if you're still there when the tide comes in you're finished!
We stopped at a big rest area just before the junction with the Seward Highway...there was a walkway that looked like the old highway, so we parked and decided to get out for a little walk to the old bridge...
It was starting to clear quite nicely...great to see the sunshine after all of the rain...
When we got home, we put on our shorts and sat outside in the sunshine...wow, what a difference from this time yesterday!
After a pretty yucky start, the day turned out to be pretty darned nice! After dinner, I read my book while Steve went through pictures. He even captured the tail end of a beautiful sunset...
Glad the sun finally came out! I was getting cold just reading and looking at the pictures.
