Thursday, August 8, 2013 (Travel to Tenderfoot Creek Campground, Summit Lake, Alaska)

We woke up to blue sky and sunshine this morning!!!  Wow, that wasn't in the forecast the last time I looked!  Before packing up, Steve climbed up on top of the fifth-wheel to take some pictures.  This first picture is taken east towards the other side of the spit...

Those are volcanos in the distance...

It was around 10:00 by the time we finished at the sani-dump in Homer and were on the highway heading back up the highway towards Soldotna.  This is the pay station at the sani-dump...too cute...

Our destination today is the Kenai-Russian River Campground near Cooper Landing...the very busy area we had gone through on the way to Homer.  It is a popular area and we are hoping to snag a campsite for the weekend. Beautiful fireweed on the hillside...

We hit the road construction again...not so bad this time since it wasn't raining...

Oil platform off in the distance...

The clouds are getting thicker....

A fisherman in Deep Creek....

The beautiful Kenai River...

...and Kenai Lake...

We arrived at Russian River Campground only to find that they only had a site available for us for one night...all sites are reserved for the weekend...oh sheesh!  So much for that idea, I'm surprised that they don't have some non-reservable sites open.  But it is a very popular spot for all of the "Combat Fisherman" and locals from Anchorage here on the weekends.  Okay...time to go to plan B.  We continued along the highway to Quartz Creek Campground...good thing Steve had marked all State/National campgrounds that have sites large enough to accommodate us.

Quartz Creek Campground did not have a gatehouse...you were to drive through, pick a site and self-register.  Now, this campground just blew me away!  They had nice large, well groomed sites...plenty big enough for us...but, the road winding through the campground was so narrow and overgrown that Steve had one hellava time maneuvering our rig through.  We were so thankful when we finally made it out!  They make nice large sites but how do they expect people with big rigs to get into them?!

Now we were onto plan C...the next campground was Tenderfoot Creek...much further than we planned and completely missing the area we wanted to see.  It is at Summit Lake...practically off the Kenai Peninsula.  This is Summit Lake...the campground is on the other side of the lake

We arrived at the turnoff, just past the Summit Lake Lodge. The access road to the campground was .6 mile dirt road that was fairly narrow...you wouldn't want to meet another rig coming the opposite way.  After what we had driven through at Quartz Creek, I was really worried about what we were getting ourselves into.  But we were pleasantly surprised...particularly when we came across site #8 that did not have a reserved sign on it.  It was huge, easily accessible for us to back into...and it was on the lake!

We quickly backed in and before we unhitched and got set up, I walked back to the entrance to self-register and pay...we just couldn't believe it was available!  After we were all set up, we thought we would go for a walk around the campground...

We think these fellows are Merlin Falcons...

Large pull thru site...
Bridge over the creek to the tenting area...
This is a view of the lake via a path from our site...

And our site...$15/night, dry camping...perfect!

We had no satellite reception here...we tried the Dish Pointer App, but the satellite was just behind a stand of trees and on the ridge of the mountain...also no-go for air antenna, so we watched some recorded shows on TV.  Then the rain started...it seems we are in for a rainy night...and day tomorrow.
