Thursday, July 5, 2018 (Travel to South Beach Casino, Scanterbury, MB)

Today is travel day...but we weren't in a hurry because we are only going about an hour northeast from here. Besides, we have paid for wifi for today (well, up to 3pm) and I really wanted to get our blog up-to-date.

It was shortly after 11:00 when we pulled out of our site. As we were going by the office, the owner and her kids came out to say goodbye and wish us safe travels...that was a nice touch!

We are going for a short visit with our daughter-in-law's (Angie) parents. Brian and Linda have a cottage at Lake Winnipeg and with a casino fairly close by, we figured that would be a good spot to spend a night or two. I checked with South Beach Casino and they do have RV parking...perfect!

Of course a cloud decided to cover the sun just as I snapped this picture...the yellow canola is beautiful...

We pulled into South Beach Casino shortly before 12:30...
RV parking is on the far side of the lot...
We quickly levelled, unhitched and put the slides out.
And then went into the casino for lunch. As we were walking in, security greeted us and asked how long we were staying. One night was okay...but there is a car show coming in tomorrow so there will be no RV parking. Well, I guess our minds have been made up for us! It truly is going to be a quick visit with Brian and Linda!

As usual, the restaurant offers a reasonably priced buffet but both Steve and I decided to order off of the menu. It took a little longer but we both enjoyed our picks...
After lunch we headed out to see Brian and Linda at their home in Belair. Lake Winnipeg in the distance. ATV trails are everywhere here...
Entering their neighbourhood...
Geez, I think they need to trim back the trees a bit....
Steve decided it was best to back into their driveway, enough just to get off the road...it's pretty narrow! Photo taken from their living room...
Linda and Brian greeted us in the driveway and after big hugs, they showed us their home and then we settled on the back deck to chat. Angie's sister's kids, Stella and Cruz are visiting their grandparents...actually both sets of grandparents since they also have a cottage down the road.

Me, Stella, Brian standing, and Linda...unfortunately we didn't get a picture of Cruz (he was inside working on a lego project). They have quite the playground built for the kids including a zip line...
Deb, Stella and Cruz's other grandma, stopped by to pick the kids up and we had a nice visit with her as well.

Before dinner, Brian and Linda took us for a walk around their neighbourhood. They have a trail from their backyard that goes down to the lake. This beach is rocky but there are a number of sandy beaches nearby as well.
Lake Winnipeg is the 6th largest lake in Canada and the 10th largest in the world by surface area. It's about 436 km/271 miles long and 111 km/69 miles at its widest point with an average depth of 12 metres/39 feet and  a maximum depth of 36 metres/118 feet.

It was a bit of a steep drop down to the water, so I decided not to trust my knees to get me down in one piece. Brian and I stayed up above...
Then we walked down to a park and another access to the lake. Across the lake is Gimli where in 1983 an Air Canada jet (Gimli Glider) ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing on an old race track...
 Brian, Linda and Steve...
On the tour of the neighbourhood, we stopped by Deb's place, saw Stella and Cruz again.  Front of the Deb's cottage...
The back yard...they have a small pool...
 And we're back...

Linda put the final touches on dinner...and it was time to eat...
After a delicious dinner, we moved back into the living room and continued our visit. It was going on 9:00 when we decided it was time to head back home. Thanks for a lovely evening, Brian and Linda! It was absolutely wonderful seeing you both again...just unfortunate that it couldn't have been longer!

Once home, we decided to go into the casino for a night cap. We managed to go in, sit at the bar and have a drink...and then leave without donating to one slot machine...amazing!

Although it's kind of hard to tell, the casino is brightly lit up as it gets dark.
