Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, 2017 (Boondocking Site, Sedona, AZ)

Well, our short time at Dead Horse Ranch State Park has come to an end...the park is fully booked for the weekend, so we have to leave. Luckily Ray and Deb found a great boondocking spot last year while in the area. We checked it out last Wednesday and it looked great...and access is just a short distance on a gravel road. So at about 8:30 we were ready to pull out. Ray and Deb had already pulled out.

Our travel day took all of about 20 minutes...up highway 89A towards Sedona...
The road is quite washboardy in spots so it was a slow go...
And here we are...there was a small van in the spot, but they left shortly after we pulled in (no, we didn't run them off...they were planning on leaving anyway)...
After getting all set up, Steve went on the trailer roof to clean and tilt the solar panels...

Next, he brought out the rake to remove the rocks so that we could put out our mat...what he found as he raked was a whole bunch of nails. He was not a happy camper!! Obviously we had parked on an old campfire pit...and they burned pallets. Out came the magnet, and after much hand picking, hopefully all the nails are gone. He found the soil to be somewhat magnetic too with all the iron in it. With 10 tires hopefully we can get out of here without some flats!
The rest of the day was pretty relaxing. Steve decided to off load the quads and go for a little spin. By late afternoon, it was time for happy hour. That building behind my head is the RC Airfield. Bonus for Steve and Ray!
What a great spot...lots of room!
Obviously we are below a flight path...

As it got darker (it is certainly getting darker earlier now...) we all went into Deb and Ray's motorhome...and Deb made some delicious War Wonton soup for dinner. It was delicious...thanks, Deb!

Saturday morning started with a beautiful sunrise...
...followed by some hot air balloons...
The RC planes were in the air early this morning. There is a trail to the airstrip from our site but the gate was locked so Steve rode his quad over to watch and take pictures...

German ME-109

The fellow on the right later told Steve that this was the first time he has taken off and landed this plane. Other more experienced pilots have done that for him, so he has only flown it once it was in the air...

He did a great job, said his legs were shaking before he landed it!

This beauty belongs to the fellow on the right. Poor guy can hardly walk...
Suspecting a fuel problem because it wouldn't idle properly his friend tilted the plane up, but unfortunately they couldn't resolve the problem, so the plane never made it in the air...
They have a beautiful well maintained facility...
After Steve had had enough of the RC airstrip, he spent the rest of the day editing pictures...so many pictures! We have visited some pretty cool places lately and have taken so many pictures...we'll get caught up soon! I know, I know, we probably post way too many but it is our journal of our adventures :-)

While Steve was busy doing that, I made a pie for dessert tonight (Wheat Belly Chocolate Coconut Tart) and then took my book outside and joined Deb in the shade. We read a bit...chatted a bit...listened to Ray play is guitar..a very nice relaxing afternoon.

As the sun went down behind a mountain, Steve got the campfire-in-a-can out and we sat around it before heading inside for dinner. We cooked dinner tonight....burgers, a simple dinner, followed by the pie I made...turned out pretty darn good, if I do say so!

    1. Thanks guys...this is the third time in 7 1/2 years we've found ourselves parked on nails! There is no evidence of a previous fire other than rotten nails so it's an old pit. Grrr!

  3. Yet another spot we need to explore. I love watching the RC planes. Not sure if I can convince Cheryl to camp there though. :-)

    1. Maybe in time once you've been on the road for awhile and get more boon docking under your belt she'll feel more comfortable. We've never ever had an issue boon docking.

    1. I would love to have one but would probably get more use out of a drone. On my wish list!

  5. Looks like a fantastic place for a few days! Let's see what you find on the quads.... no more nails hopefully! I would have a miniature freakshow if I was parked on them.
