We were up at 5:00 this morning...had our coffee, showered and then got to work on our pack up. It was 7:50 when we pulled out of our site and said goodbye to the Barstow/Calico KOA campground...and headed over to I-15 for a short distance before taking highway 58 west towards Bakersfield.
It was a beautiful travel day! Today's blog...like the next few travel days...will be full of pictures of what we saw along the way, as we head north to BC. Here we are about to leave the Mojave Desert as we head over the Tehachapi Pass...
Obviously a windy area with all the wind turbines...
We decided to pull into a truck stop in Tehachipi for a biffy break and as we were slowing down...guess what? Yup...that old familiar sound reared it's ugly head...the truck was squealing again after only 308 km/193 miles! Well, the air was rather "blue" inside the truck as Steve muttered a few choice words! Unbelievable but not unexpected. We've now had three Isuzu dealers involved and none of them have been capable of diagnosing and fixing this squealing.
Tehachipi pass is very lush and green this year after all of the rains...
Interestingly enough, the truck did not squeal at all going down the Tehachipi mountain pass.
Coming down out of the pass approaching Bakersfield we can see forever...
We took the Westside Parkway to Stockdale Highway, cutting across to the I-5. This is the Kern River...
Eerily Steve commented how these rows of plantings reminded him of the rows of war graves we visited last fall in Normandy...
Lots of blooms...
California aqua duct...
Look at all the Prickly Pear Cactus on the other side of the freeway! It appeared to be planted as a fence...
Fields of yellow...
California is not only an agriculture state but have a lot of cattle. We passed a few huge stockyards and boy do they stink, long after you pass them!
Traffic in Sacremento!
Sacramento River...
This appeared to be a man made lake for water sports...
Finally...a long 10 1/2 hour day, 880 km/550 miles we arrive at our destination for today! Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, CA...
We parked with all of the other RV's in the truck stop. There is a beautiful looking RV park that charges $28/night but for just a quick overnight stop, the truck stop will work...besides, the RV park was full. This is a very popular spot for both truckers and RV'ers.
We only put out our bedroom slide, managing to find a spot for all of the stuff that is on the bed when we travel, and then got ready to walk over to the casino for dinner. Tonight was senior's night at the buffet...half price! Sweet!
As we stepped out of the trailer, a couple was standing there...it was a former customer of Steve's from his working days almost 7 years ago. Dave and Sherrie Haines saw us pull in and were also heading over for dinner, so we joined them and enjoyed a lovely time chatting with them over dinner. They had spent their winter in Indio, CA and were also on their way home. Wow...small world!
In order to get the half price dinner, we had to get a casino club card which also had a free $20 on it to spend at the slots. So after dinner, we set out to spend it. As it turns out I was up $12.25 and cashed it in...that paid for part of our dinner! Steve took this picture of me...and then found out the next morning that cameras are not allowed inside the casino...oops...
