Friday, March 25, 2016 (Sportsman's Beach BLM Campground, Lake Walker, NV)

We were both awake early this morning...after tossing and turning for awhile, I decided to get up and put the coffee on and light the heater. It hadn't gotten as cold overnight as forecast but it was still a little chilly. We had a pretty sunrise over the lake...
After our usual coffee start to the day, we got our butts in gear. By 9:30 we had four big bags of dirty laundry loaded into the truck and were ready to head into Hawthorne. I had found Joseph's Market and Laundromat on-line, so that is where we went. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the address, it was just a corner store...no laundromat. My heart sunk...oh great! But I was told there was a laundromat a couple of blocks away and given directions...whew!

We found the laundromat, lugged the bags in and I got started. There is a military museum nearby Steve wanted to see called Hawthorne Ordnance Museum, and since I was not particularly interested, Steve headed there. So I'll pass the blog over to him now, to tell you all about it...

The website said they open at 10:00 a.m. so that's when I arrived. By 10:15 I had finished viewing the outside displays and the closed sign was still on so I was about to leave when one of the volunteers showed up...and said you're on Hawthorne time.
Turns out he was a very, very enthusiastic volunteer who clearly loved being here and showing me around. I eventually had to tell him that my wife will be done doing our laundry soon so I had better get my picture taking done, but he kept on talking, however he eventually left me alone. Very nice fella though...

Okay...this is for all my friends with Drones...

The tail was removed for safety reasons...people were walking into it...
This is their other Drone complete with it's tail...
No small hand held controller back then...

 Cluster Bomb Vietnam Era...

Can't remember what these were called but there are thousands of these packed into a large canister that looks like a huge shotgun shell. Used against large enemy frontal attacks. The tour guide gave me these, so we now both have our very own toothpicks! This was a great museum and I highly recommend it. It's also free but donations are welcomed. Just wish I wasn't rushed for time.

About an hour and a half later Steve was back. I was just folding laundry so he gave me a hand and in no time we were finished and onto our next errand...diesel. Steve decided to just fill one tank up...$2.26/gallon...not bad but a far cry from the $1.68/gallon at Fry's in Yuma! Apparently it's cheaper further north, so we'll fuel up at a truck stop in Winnemucca, NV. Steve likes saying Winnemucca :-)

Next, we stopped at Ace Hardware...we'd like to stock up on FreshCab, but no luck, they didn't have any. After that, it was to Safeway...where I picked up a few groceries. Our final stop...to fill our 2 five gallon water containers at a Whiskey Flats RV Park...and we were on our way home. There's our fifth-wheel way down there...
There a a few sign posts giving the lake level during various years as you drive down the road...this is how high the lake was in 1927. There was another sign even higher up the road...

It was going on 2:00 by the time we got home. After bringing in all of the bags of laundry and groceries, we had a bite to eat and then we both got to work. I put the laundry away and made up the bed while Steve put water into the trailer. We hitched up the trailer in preparation for leaving early tomorrow...and our chores for the day were done.

The wind had really picked up but it was fairly sheltered on the side of the trailer, so we sat outside enjoying the sunshine. We've been watching the weather on our route closely and when I checked the forecast for Hawthorne, there was a "special weather statement":

"...SNOW POSSIBLE FOR MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE...
A SLIDER TYPE STORM WILL PUSH A STRONG COLD FRONT THROUGH THE REGION SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING. SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY LATE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON DOWN TO WESTERN NEVADA VALLEYS INCLUDING RENO AND CARSON CITY. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL DROP AROUND 20 DEGREES BETWEEN SUNDAY AND MONDAY WITH FREEZING TEMPERATURES POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT SUNDAY."

YIKES! Good thing we are leaving tomorrow! The temperature drops from 70F Sunday to a high of 50F Monday. After checking the weather forecast on our route, it will definitely be much colder with some rain. Well, I think we are going to be in long pants, shoes and jackets very soon!
