Saturday, September 15, 2018 (Pine Hills RV Park, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island)

Saturday was another beautiful sunny day. We took the morning off from sightseeing to do a couple of chores...mainly laundry. Of course, Steve edited pictures while I did that.

As we were heading out in the car after lunch, Steve noticed that a hub cap was missing off of the back rear wheel of the truck...sheesh! Now he has to try to find a replacement. After almost 9 years on the road we've never lost a hub cap. When we caught the ferry to PEI there were around 20 or more semi trucks on board so there's the possibility that one of them needed our hub cap more than we did...you never know...

This afternoon, we drove to Brackley Beach and drove the full length of Prince Edward Island National Park, stopping at all of the beaches to take a look.

Dalvay Lake...
Dalvay Beach
Prince Edward Island National Park protects a portion of the Maritime plain Natural Region, an area of sand dunes,s barrier islands, beaches, sandspits and wetlands. Spanning three distinct areas - Cavendish, Brackley-Dalvay and Greenwich - the Park provides diverse habitats for a variety of plants and animals and many opportunities to discover this magnificent part of Canada.

Parks Canada protects and presents 39 natural regions across Canada: wild places ranging from mountains and plains to boreal forests and lakes to tundra and glaciers and much more.

Stanhope Beach...

Covehead Harbour Lighthouse...
The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is a very good example of the socio-economic development of Queens County. The current lighthouse and its predecessor have been important to the local fishing community and to recreational boaters as a guiding light to the entrance of Covehead Bay. The current lighthouse is an important symbol of the island’s maritime heritage as one of the most photographed lighthouses in Prince Edward Island.

Come on...lets go!
The Gale of 1851
The forenoon had been particularly balmy. Schooners had sailed into the shallow waters in search of mackerel and cod. But darkness found the vessels trapped in the stillness close to land. There was no breeze to carry them offshore. That evening a strong wind blew from the northeast. By midnight it had raged into a powerful gale. For several days the wind and waves gathered strength. On the morning of the fourth day, the sea subsided. Battered ships were strewn along the north shore. Bodies of sailors and fishermen were entangled amongst the wreckage. Many men wee buried here in Prince Edward Island. Their graves are a silent reminder of the changing moods of the sea.

Shaws Beach...
After we had finished checking out the beaches, we decided to drive back down the southern coast to DeSable and drive along the shore route that we missed yesterday because it was late...and it had been a long day.

It was just before 4:30 when we dropped the car off. We can't say enough about Tolga and PEI Car Rental...very personable and a nice change from the "big rental companies". We chatted with Tolga for a few minutes and he let us know that an associate, who would be "minding the shop" for the next few hours, would be driving us home after the office closed.

As planned, we had a couple of hours to have drinks and dinner on the waterfront....so off we went. Such a nice day to walk along the waterfront...quite a change from the other day.

The Norwegian Gem...

We went to Peakes Quay Restaurant and Bar, a spot we had picked out the other day. We started with drinks in the bar while we waited for a table outside....

We moved from the bar out onto the deck for dinner...we started with fresh PEI mussels...
The views from the restaurant and bar are great!
The Norwegian Gem leaving port...

After a wonderful dinner, we walked back to PEI Car Rental. Along the way, I got a picture taken with this guy...
We arrive just as Tolga's associate (can't remember his name) was locking up. He gave us a ride home...great service!

As we got home, we saw this...their idea of a hayride! Cute!
