Thursday, March 17, 2022 (Travel to Churchill County Fairgrounds, Fallon, NV)

We had lots of blue sky and sunshine for the first part of our travel day today. After a stop at the sani-dump on our way out, we turned left onto highway 93 continuing our journey north. Our day was uneventful (just the way we like it) but with lots of gorgeous scenery that included a number of mountain passes.

Earl and Allison leading the way...

Must be a windy area...Wind Turbine Farm...
Into the Humboldt National Forest and Conners Pass, elevation 7722'...

Leaving the Humboldt National Forest...

At Ely, NV we took highway 50 (aka "The Loneliest Highway in America") going west. We last took this highway in 2012 and it would be 20-30 minutes before we saw another vehicle and at at that time no cell service...so it was a little unnerving in case of a breakdown or emergency.

Robinson Mine site....
Another straight stretch up ahead before going through more mountains, and look at all that traffic...LOL!

A colourful hillside...

As we entered Eureka, NV we pulled over in a rest area for lunch. A nice spot for a break before continuing on through Eureka...

Lots of snow in the mountains...

Another mountain pass to go through as we approach Austin, NV...

Austin Summit, Elevation 7484'...

7% grade right into Austin!
Down, down, down we go!
Austin seems to be built on a mountainside...
It's still downhill after leaving Austin...
Mt Airy Summit, not quite as high as previous ones, at an elevation of 6679'...
We were on a long straight stretch when at least a dozen emergency vehicles went speeding east past us at different intervals. Have no idea what happened but with that many police cars, ambulances, fire response, etc...it mustn't have been good!
Before reaching this huge dry lake bed ahead there was an F-18 fighter that passed us a couple of times real low as it snaked it's way through the mountains. Very cool but too quick for photos. There's a Naval Aviation Warfare Base in Fallon...
Sand Mountain Rec Area...a popular spot for OHV's. A few RV's were heading into the camping area below the dunes...
The dry lakebed goes on for miles...
We arrived at the Churchill County Fairgrounds in Fallon around 5:00...a long travel day! We did our best at finding level sites...we were lucky, but Earl and Allison had a difficult time. No unhooking as we are just here overnight. We ordered a pizza to be delivered and enjoyed a relaxing evening...I think we may have played a game or 2 of Rummikub!

  1. Love following your travels, pics, trials and tribulations. Great stuff and a lot of work. Not to be a negative Nelly, but what is your exit plan? That is, when you decide for whatever reason to stop travelling (God forbid that ever to happen). With the prices of real estate Sky High here in BC, is it possible to buy property still having been out of the market for so long? I know that my wife and I would not be able to do it now, and we are glad to have bought back in 1997 in South Surrey when we did. Anyways, just a curious question and I know this was brought up in a subject by Howard and Linda several times and they made several plans, only to end up in Florida in the immense Villages location. Safe trip and keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks for tagging along Guy and great question. With the price of real estate in BC we would never be able to get back into the market, so our least favourite options are renting a condo or apartment but vacancies are low. We may just sell the big truck and park the 5th wheel in an RV Park permanently in an area that has lots to do. As long as our health holds out we would still like to travel. We would like to eventually get back to the type of camping we used to do in a smaller RV and pickup out in the wilds of BC and beyond which we can’t do with our current setup. We also want to do more foreign travel.
