Wednesday, March 16, 2022 (Cathedral Gorge State Park, Panaca, NV)

We started our exploring this morning by taking a drive through Panaca, NV. Not an awful lot there but there is this huge formation in the middle of town next to the high school...
After that, we went back to the park and Visitors Center...

An antler tree...

To see the other end of the State Park required us to go back to highway 93 and continue north for a couple of miles...to Eagle Point and Miller Point. The views of the Gorge were absolutely amazing! As usual, the pictures just don't do it justice!

Views from the Eagle Point Trail...
Lots of hiking/biking trails below...

We continued along the trail...

The views are incredible!

Behind the gazebo there is a stairway that takes you down into the gorge to the trails...

Looking back...
Our next stop was the Bullionville Cemetery. We drove back to the Visitors Center, parked the truck and found the trail that climbs up the hillside to the cemetery.

After lunch, we headed back to the day-use area to explore more of the slots...

Up we go!
Steve saw a cave up ahead...

We had lost Earl and Allison but Steve spotted them coming back down from a cave they found...
You can see the cave in the upper left.
Earl went back to the cave with Steve in case he fell in...LOL!
Looking down...
Earl waiting for Steve to come back up...
You really gotta be a billy goat maneuvering around and through these formations!

Steve...

With all of the touring done, Allison and I wanted to get out for a hike, so we left the guys at home and headed out on the Juniper Draw Loop. It starts just behind their campsite and loops around the gorge basin. We'd like to do the Hawk's Ridge Trail sometime...it goes up and follows the ridge...but that will have to wait until our next visit.

To view my Relive video....Juniper Loop Trail.
Some pretty ugly looking clouds up there...hope we make it home before it rains!

That was an awesome 5 km hike...and no rain! By the time we got home, we were pooped! We certainly got our steps in today! But it was a great way to end our stay here. While we were gone, Steve was filling water containers and preparing for our departure.

Tomorrow we continue north and then west (before going north again) as we gradually make our way back to BC.

  1. Cool antler tree. Always live an old cemetery, especially when they are remote. What an awesome place! I’d love to do those slots! Maybe a fall trip!
