Monday, March 21, 2022 (Travel to Turtle Rock RV Resort, Gold Beach, OR)

And yet another beautiful sunny start to the day as we left Bear River Casino and headed back down the hill to Highway 101...
Beautiful row of trees...
It wasn't long before we saw the Pacific Ocean...

And unfortunately now a cloudy sky and haze caused by sea mist...
The highway went inland for a bit and look what we saw...a herd of elk! Not the best picture as I quickly snapped it...

I was curious about these gold bears that adorn the bridge over Klamath River, so I did a little research on Google...
And this is what I found out...
A hidden part of Northern California history lies just a short distance west of U.S. 101 where it crosses the Klamath River. You’ll see two very impressive Golden Bears on the bridge, and while they are an interesting landmark, the real story is only a few hundred yards west of the bridge on Klamath River Road. Standing quietly in their shadow, just a short distance downstream, are the original Bears that hold the rest of the story. The original bridge was built about 1925, and stood for almost 40 years. In 1964 a ravaging flood took out the bridge and swept the town of Klamath away, so US 101 was relocated, the current replacement bridge was built, and the town relocated further upstream and away from the river. These concrete bears and a little bit of the bridge are what remain of the flood, and are really the “original” Bears.
A little further up the highway we came across road construction...bridge replacement, actually. We came across quite a bit of road construction on 101...
Yikes, this should be fun navigating our big rig through this...
A little narrow, but we made it without any damage.
Wilson Creek Beach...

More road construction...

Approaching Crescent City, CA...

The Chetco River as we go through Brookings, OR...
Our destination for today had been Harris Beach State Park but after a drive through, there were only a few sites left that would fit Earl and Allison but not us. With Spring Break right now and no reservations, we had to continue on.

We stopped for lunch at a pull-out on the side of the highway and to "re-group". Earl was needing gas so we continued another half an hour up to Gold Beach.
While in Gold Beach, we decided to go back a couple of miles to an RV park we had passed. I made a quick call to Turtle Rock RV Resort to ensure they had room and finding out they did, we headed there. After checking in, we proceeded to our pull-through sites. They were convenient to the laundry room but we were not really impressed with our site as the long grass had just been cut and not raked, and with it being wet, the grass cuttings stuck to everything! Oh well...still a nice RV Park 😊

So today, we had another very reasonable 152 mile drive, which as you can see from the snapshot off Google Maps was another windy, twisty drive...
Allison and I took advantage of the laundromat and spent the rest of the afternoon doing laundry. After dinner, we took a walk over to the beach...it involved following a trail under the highway.

There were some very nice looking cabins at the Resort...

Kissing Rock... is a big rock formation you can see if you enter Gold Beach from the south. There are a variety of versions of how the name was given to this Gold Beach landmark, but the most common version is that this spot is where local lovers met.
Steve taking his drone up for a flight....
2:55 video Steve took with his drone. He is still learning to video edit and the music score is somewhat limited 😊
Pictures taken from the drone. Too bad it's such a dull grey evening...

A beautiful area...can just imagine it on a warm sunny day!

  1. We stopped and saw those bears one time as well. Pretty interesting history. We love that section of the coast, so scenic and so much to see!

    1. We love the coast and wide open Pacific. Spring Break is not the time to visit though.
