Saturday, August 1 to Tuesday, August 11, 2020 (Peace Arch RV Park, Surrey, BC)

Life is still ticking along here in Surrey. We don't do an awful lot...always getting out for a good power-walk and bike ride daily. We have been enjoying a really good stretch of weather (we even had to run the A/C) that lasted until Thursday (August 6) when we experienced a few days of rain and cooler temperatures...it was actually a nice change! But we are pretty well back to sun/broken clouds now and the temperatures are more moderate rather than the scorchers we had earlier.

We have been so fortunate to see Chris, Angela and Isaac every weekend...alternating between our place and theirs. Saturday (August 1), it was their turn to come out to our place.

We had a wonderful afternoon visiting...followed by an easy dinner of grilled burgers...
And then dessert!
Sunday (August 2) morning Steve decided the car needed to be washed so moved the truck over to the visitor parking area near the entrance and brought the car over.

With the car all clean, I took off for a trip to Michael's in Langley. I'm tackling a new knitting project that requires circular needles. Not knowing much about them, I had previously bought the right needle size but didn't realize they came in different lengths (duh...now that I think about it!). So I made a trip out to exchange them.

At 4:30 we joined our next door neighbours, Roland and Carol, along with Don and Judith, and walked down to Ralph and Linda's (4 sites down from us) for happy hour.  We enjoyed a couple of hours of chit-chat with these wonderful folks and getting to know more about each other...so nice to be included!

Hard to tell in the photo, our 'physically distanced' gathering - from left to right; Carol, Roland, Don, Judith, Ralph and Linda...
We didn't do anything special Monday (August 3)...just the usual stuff (not very exciting!).

Tuesday (August 4) morning we had a little morning fog but it cleared quickly. We were off in the truck with our bikes on the back shortly after 8:30. Remember way back on May 8 when we rode the 33 km/20.5 mile Boundary Bay Dyke Trail from Mud Bay Park in Surrey? We hadn't made it all of the way to Tsawwassen so had vowed to take the bikes to the other end and ride the rest of the trail...well, today was the day!

Our first stop was at a wildlife viewing platform...
And no wildlife!

We were unaware that part of the trail leaves the beach and detours through a residential area for a few blocks. We took a side street with beach access and discovered there was no trail...hmmm!
We finally made it back to the trail. These riders were gathered for a photo shoot...
One lone tree in the distance near the shoreline...
That point of land in the above photo is Point Roberts in the US and is one of the goofiest borders as it's totally isolated from the rest of the US as shown in the map below.
Point Roberts is a pene-exclave of the United States on the southernmost tip of the Tsawwassen peninsula, south of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The area, which had a population of 1,314 at the 2010 census, is reached by land by traveling 25 mi (40 km) through Canada. It is a census-designated place in Whatcom County, Washington with a post office, and a ZIP Code of 98281. Direct sea and air connections with the U.S. are available across Boundary Bay.
Point Roberts was created when the United Kingdom and the United States settled the Pacific Northwest American-Canadian border dispute in the mid-19th century with the Oregon Treaty. Both parties agreed the 49th parallel would delineate both countries' territories, but they overlooked the small area that incorporates Point Roberts (south of the 49th parallel). Questions about ceding the territory to the United Kingdom and later to Canada have been raised since its creation but its status has remained unchanged.

Our neighbour Roland works for the owner of this 60 acre commercial greenhouse property...
The owner is Dutch and of course has beautiful gardens...
Even has an infinity pool...
Time for a water break...

A medical flight landing at the Boundary Bay Airport...he took off a short time later...
Mini grass islands...
We rode just beyond where we had turned around on our previous ride then started heading back...
A Great Blue Heron was sitting on that log but by the time Steve got the phone from me it was flying away...
These trees were loaded with apples...
Must have been an orchard at one time...
Kings Links Golf Course By The Sea...
Bike art at our next rest stop...
Back from their photo shoot. There was plenty of evidence of horses left on the trail...LOL!
Horse stables...
A garden mound with a Great Blue Heron and a howling Wolf...
Stable owners residence...
The tide goes out so far the ocean isn't even visible...
The residential area we had to detour through...

Two and  half hours and 24 kms/15 miles later, we were back at the truck...with very sore butts! LOL After loading the bikes back on the truck, Steve walked down to take pictures of the beach...the weather today was much nicer than last time we had been here!
More and more people were arriving all the time. This was busy enough for a week day...we don't do parks on the weekends.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (August 5, 6 and 7) were pretty uneventful...just the usual stuff. As I mentioned earlier, we woke to rain on Thursday and much cooler temps. On Friday Steve spent part of the day trying to hook up the park's TV cable so that he could watch the Vancouver Canucks vs the Minnesota Wild hockey game. It's been almost 10 years since we've hooked up to park TV cable. He had been able to watch a previous game on our satellite but tonight's game wasn't being played on that channel...sheesh! To make a long story short, he finally got it working. So he spent the evening in the bedroom watching the little TV in there while I sat out with the big TV watching old re-runs of CSI Miami and knitting. By the way, our Canucks won in OT and are now into the playoffs!

Saturday (August 8) ended up being cloudy and rainy for the most part...much more rain than predicted! But by the time we headed of into Coquitlam just after 2:30, it had stopped and the sun was coming out.

It was our turn to go into Chris and Angela's...we started off visiting inside...
And then moved out into the backyard...
A rare sight...Isaac sitting with Gramma! Well, I had to bribe him by holding Chris's phone that had his favourite shows streaming. He looks like he's asleep but he's watching the cartoons...
He wasn't still very long...time to go "mow" the lawn!
Angela's homemade pizza for dinner tonight...yum!
Angela cut up the pizza into small pieces for Isaac but he wasn't having anything to do with it! He wanted the big pieces Grampa (and the rest of us) were eating!

After dinner and it's time to colour with Grampa...
Another great visit!

Sunday (August 9) we were pretty well back into full-on sunshine, just not as steaming hot as it had been...which is fine! Nothing special today....I sat outside knitting. Steve took care of a bunch of odds and ends and then joined me in the shade.

Steve's buddy relaxing in the grass below our window as we eat dinner. There are lots of rabbits here and they're all the same colour.
Monday (August 10) morning we decided to return to Sunnyside Acres Urban Forest for our walk...a nice change from walking the campground! Great trails there...hard to believe you are in the middle of a huge city!
On the way home, we took a drive through White Rock. The picture doesn't show it but we are halfway down an extremely steep street with several round-a-bouts that eventually takes you to the waterfront.
The rest of the day was spent working on the blog...plus a little reading and knitting. Steve did one chore...he fires up both quads and the generator monthly to give them a good run. Today when he did it, his quad made a strange sound like half a backfire and quit. When turning the key again only the display and instrument lights would come on then dim. He checked the battery and got a 12.1 volt reading...a little low. Tomorrow he'll call GA Checkpoint Yamaha.

Tuesday (August 11) morning started with fairly cloudy sky...we did have some sun as the day wore on but for the most part, there was a high cloud covering.

Today we thought we would drive to Blackie Spit and walk along Crescent Beach. But before we headed off, Steve spoke with GA Checkpoint Yamaha and they said it's most likely the battery. They are the original batteries in our 2010 quads so we probably got more years than normal from them. Hopefully that's all it is and nothing more serious. Steve will deal with it after our visit to Victoria.

We enjoyed a good 2 mile/3.22 kms walk to the end of the pathway and back. It was quite busy on the wide trail and getting busier as we returned to our car...good time to get out!
And that pretty well brings us up-to-date again! Tomorrow we are heading over to Victoria for a few days of family time. Looking forward to it!

  2. Thanks for the tour of the Boundary Bay trail. Hopefully it's only the batteries that need replacing on Steve's quad.
