Monday, December 4, 2017 (Travel to Kartchner Caverns State Park, Benson, AZ)

With less than an hour's drive to our next destination, we took our time this morning. Our travel days in this area of southeastern Arizona have been very short...gotta like it!

So it was after 10:30 when we finally pulled out of Queen Mine RV Park and headed north on highway 80, climbing out of the valley...bye Bisbee!

Oh no...not another tunnel! This one was over 14 feet...whew!
Nine miles later, we took highway 90 that goes further east before it curves north. We went through a Border Patrol checkpoint. We were asked if we had our passports with us...he didn't seem to want to see them but was happy with the fact we were actually carrying them with us in the truck. A few miles down the road we could see a surveillance balloon in the air.
We pulled into Kartchner Caverns State Park just before noon. Since check in time wasn't until 2:00, the nice fellow at the gate gave us directions to the RV parking area so we could walk to the campground to see if our site was available.
Turned out there was no problem...our site #52 was empty. This is a really nice state park...large sites and well spaced. We have 30 amp power and water...and we passed the sani-dump on the way into the campground. Lots of empty sites too.
After disconnecting and getting all set up, we decided to take a walk over to the Discovery Center and have a look. We confirmed our cavern tour tomorrow morning at 9:15 and were told we could pick up our tickets at 9:00 a.m.

There is a big exhibit area that we had a look at...Steve didn't bring his camera, so we'll take pictures tomorrow when we come for our tour.

In the meantime, I used my phone camera to take this picture...too funny...
