Sunday, April 5 to Saturday April 18, 2020 (Peace Arch RV Park, Surrey, BC)

Well...two weeks have slipped by and as I look at my daily notes for writing this blog, I realize that most days are a repeat of the previous day, with just a few exceptions. Basically, puttering around in the morning, going for a walk around the campground and sitting outside reading (or in my case, also doing some knitting) in the afternoon...along with lots of TV watching.

There have been a few additional things thrown in...like cleaning. I have started washing all the wood cabinets with Murphy's Wood Soap, doing about an hour each day. Unfortunately, after three consecutive days, my arm and shoulder were so sore (soap, rinse off, then dry) that I am spreading out the days that I work on it. Good grief, there's a lot of wood in this fifth-wheel!

I've been grocery shopping on-line with varying degrees of success at actually getting everything I ordered...toilet paper, disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer seem to still be in short supply. Personally, I just don't think they give out any of these items in on-line orders (4 to-date), rather you have to go in personally to purchase them.

Masked-man Steve as he prepares to go into Canadian Tire to buy a new spray nozzle for the hose...
Steve also took the bikes off the back of the trailer, cleaned them and pumped up the tires. So, we have been adding rides around the campground to our daily routine. Pretty boring...I think we will have to try putting them on the back of the truck and driving to a bike path. That will likely be in the coming week.

The weather for the most part has been sunny and beautiful...some pretty chilly mornings though. So that helps...sunshine makes for a much sunnier disposition when you can't go anywhere or do anything that you are used to. Not seeing Chris, Angela and our one-year old grandson, Issac, has been really tough...especially since they are only about a half hour away! Thankfully, we can have video chats...that helps!

OMG....shorts and flip-flops!
Easter Sunday was a lovely day! We spent most of the morning video chatting with family and friends...awesome! I also made a traditional Easter Sunday dinner....turkey (a frozen breast), mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce and broccoli casserole. No fancy china or serving dishes...but it all worked and was pretty darned tasty!
The "Easter Bunny" even showed up outside while we ate dinner...
A few other activities intermingled with our usual routine...cleaning/maintenance chores, laundry (only 1 person allowed in the laundry room at a time) and Steve washed the truck....
The next day, he thoroughly cleaned inside the cab. Of course we ended up having a little rain too (it always rains when Steve washes the truck LOL)! Not much, but enough to cause the pollen to spot the clean truck.

A picture in the gardens while on our daily walk Friday...I love magnolia trees!
And "our gardener" came by to mow our lawn...
All of this self-isolation and physical distancing from anyone outside your household seems to be working here in BC. We learned yesterday the "curve" appears to be flattening after our Provincial Health Officer, along with our Health Minister gave a very detailed briefing. As of today, BC has 1647 cases of Covid-19 with 81 deaths...987 have fully recovered and 115 remain in hospital (54 in ICU). All indications at this time lead to some restrictions possibly being lifted gradually starting mid-May. However officials are adamant that "life as it used to be" will not happen possibly for 12 to 18 months. Physical distancing to some degree will be here for a long time.

There have been 33,218 cases in Canada with 1469 deaths and 11,168 recovering from the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Unfortunately until they come up with a vaccine, our travels will be limited which means no travels south this year :(

We asked if we could extend our stay here at Peace Arch RV Park to 6 months...and I guess with cancellations they've had due to COVID-19, we managed to secure our site here until September 20th. We would have preferred to go out to our favourite spot, Fort Camping in Fort Langley but with it being a regional park, it is currently closed until the May 24th long weekend. There obviously was some confusion, because they had originally said that since we were coming in for a  month (May 1-31), it would be fine...but somewhere along the way that changed. I only found out that they were not letting anyone into the park until May 24 weekend when I contacted them to see if we could extend our stay. Anyway, we have cancelled those reservations. We also managed to get a 7 month booking at Oceanside RV Resort on Vancouver Island October 1st, so still have to come up with a place to stay between September 20 and October 1....who knows, they may let us stay the additional 11 nights here.

And that pretty well sums up the last couple of weeks...and will likely be a preview to the coming weeks as well.  Stay safe and healthy everyone!

  1. Loved seeing the Rhododendrons in bloom, we will miss those in Western WA this year since we are headed to north Idaho sometime in the next 2-4 weeks where we'll be sitting still for at least 4 months. Darn virus changing all of our travel plans.

So sorry to hear your trips south will be on hold for quite a while, we will miss you next winter, however, we're most likely spending most of the winter in Tucson, we want to be in a place where medical care is better than Q. Stay safe and stay well!

    1. Thankful we acquired places to hunker down but never thought we would be in this position until we were too old to travel. Going to miss all our southern friends!

  6. At least they let you stay for 6 more months. Wow. I know what you mean about the Murphy Oil soap. So much wood!!! Q won’t be the same without you! Why exactly can’t you come? Is that a border rule?

    1. Never say never I guess as anything is possible. It will depend on when a vaccine is available, the value of our dollar, travel healthcare costs, and the border rules.

    2. Yeah we are sure not looking forward to winter in Canada either. We have spent most of the last ten winters in Q as well.

  10. This will certainly change life as we now face so many changes. Never in our wildest dreams could we have foreseen something like this happening in our lifetimes.
Found some of those cleaning supplies at Canadian Tire while the grocery store shelves were and still are empty.
Wise to find somewhere to hunker down.
Be Safe and Enjoy the isolation.

    It's about time.

    1. Crazy times for sure, best to hunker down and stay safe! We actually managed to get toilet paper in our grocery order yesterday, but think finding the disinfecting wipes and sanitizer may required checking out other sources, like Canadian tire.
