Tuesday, August 8 to Wednesday, August 16, 2023 (Puntledge RV Park, Courtenay, BC)

As usual, the summer is slipping by quickly! It's been a busy couple of weeks (especially the second one) with lots of pictures, so I broke our blog update into two postings.

The first week started off pretty routine. We actually had some cloud and rain Tuesday (Aug. 8) and Wednesday (Aug. 9) but it was also very warm and humid! Both days started with light sprinkles late morning with heavier rain in the afternoon...we sure needed it!

Steve went over to Earl's and worked on our boat transom repair every morning for a half hour or so. On his way home he was apparently day dreaming and didn't notice that he had left the 80 km speed zone and was now in a 60 km zone. Well the RCMP officer coming in the opposite direction did. For the first time in decades Steve got himself a $138 speeding ticket!

Other than that, we did our usual walks and even got out for a bike ride.

Friday (Aug. 11) morning Steve's brother and sister-in-law stopped by for a visit. Dave and Kerry are visiting from Thompson, Manitoba and were staying at Dave's daughter's (Robyn's) place in Campbell River. Robyn and daughter, Jenny, came along too. It had been a long time since we had seen Robyn, and we had never met Jenny.

We sat outside catching up and then decided to go for a walk down to the river...Steve, Robyn, me, Jenny, Kerry and Dave...
We saw this young buck munching away on apples...
Kerry preparing some sushi for us to try while I was inside making sandwiches for lunch. They also brought a bunch of beets that they had raided from a friends garden...
Before heading home, we took them to Nymph Falls...and then they headed back to Campbell River from there. Robyn didn't want to join us for the short hike...
A great visit with them! They head down island, visiting friends and family before heading back to Manitoba.

Saturday (Aug. 12) morning Steve went over to Earl's to finish the transom repair and bring the boat home. (Steve here...) For such a small job it was expensive and labour intensive with lots of bolts, screws, and rivets to remove, two coats of epoxy that required sanding between coats, then paint. A trip to get replacement stainless steel nuts, bolts, and screws, lots of drilling and reinstalling. And not a single photo of our masterpiece! I can't thank Earl enough for the use of his wood working shop and his labour. The boat spent the winter and spring stored at Earl and Allison's...thanks so much guys!

I was just finishing up a load of laundry when Rob, Angie and the boys arrived. After their 2-week vacation, they are on their way home. About 20 minutes after they arrived, Steve got home...followed by Earl with the boat in his utility trailer. Good timing...they had another pair of strong arms to help them unload it. Thanks again Earl!

The kids only stayed about 45 minutes...a short visit but so glad they stopped by! They still have a 3 hour drive back to North Saanich. A heat warning has been issued for the coming days...after the clouds and rain they had last week, they wish they could have stayed at the lake!

There had been a big car show in town, so Sunday (Aug. 13) they finished it off with a "cruise-by". Steve was disappointed he didn't make it to the Hot August Nights Classic Car Show yesterday with over 500 cars on display, but was happy to hear that the route for the cruise-by took them along our road. The estimated time that they would be driving by was 1:30, so we took our chairs out to the road at 1:15. As we approached we could hear the rumble of cars, they were early so we only caught the tail end of it...

A short .48 minute video...
At about 3:30 we headed out to Deep Bay and my brother's place...Don and Rhonda had invited us for dinner. They have a beautiful spot with ocean views. That's Chrome Island on the left...
A close-up...it is the home of Chrome Island Lighthouse with Denman and Hornby Islands in the distance...
It had been a very hot, humid day but it was lovely sitting on their deck in the shade...
Dinner time! Delicious, thanks Rhonda!
A cruise ship goes by in the distance...
A lovely evening and a great visit!

Monday (Aug. 14) I had a lunch date! My (ex)sister-in-law, Linda, was camping with family at Pacific Playgrounds Oceanside Resort in Black Creek, about a half hour north of us. We hadn't seen each other for years so finally managing a get together today was wonderful!

We met at the Black Creek Diner...
And I was so happy to see that she brought along her daughter, Melanie, and her granddaughter (her son's daughter), Alyshia...
So wonderful seeing you all...we had a great time catching up! Let's not leave it so long next time!

We had more visitors on Tuesday (Aug. 15)...good friends, Rob and Nancy, from Saanichton were having a week away in Parksville, about an hour south of us and decided to come up and check out our new home-base. We usually manage to get together for breakfast when we are visiting Rob, Angie and the boys, so it was really nice to have them visit us here.

We went out for lunch at The Blackfin Pub in Comox. Steve had asked the waitress to take our picture but she was too busy, so Steve took a selfie...unfortunately it didn't turn out great...
After lunch, we took them for a little tour of the area and then sat inside our trailer with the A/C running...it was another hot day! Another great visit!

Wednesday (Aug. 16) and another very hot day! Thank goodness we have full hook-ups with 50 amp power included in our monthly rent here. We have been running the A/C a lot this summer! Luckily, though, it is forecast to be somewhat cooler by tomorrow afternoon...and the next few days. Our son, Chris, and his family are coming over for a visit and will be sleeping in a tent. There have been a number of tents in the lower section of the campground and I can't begin to imagine how very hot they get with temperatures in the low 30's C/mid to high 80's F with the humidex making it feel like it's in the high 30's!

With company coming, I did some grocery shopping and housecleaning. After dinner, Steve "weed-wacked" the grass/weeds behind our trailer in preparation for the tent.

Stay tuned to read all about our next five days with Chris, Angela and Isaac!

  1. Violator! That sucks though. Barb got pulled over the other day but got off with a warning. Sushi sounds delicious!

    1. Well I don’t have Barb’s gender and great looks to get out of a ticket. 😏 We’re not overly experienced with Sushi but these were shrimp so pretty good. We won’t do raw fish though because we won’t eat bait! 🤣
