Monday, February 16 to Tuesday, March 10, 2026 (Puntledge RV Park, Courtenay, BC/Lake Cowichan, BC)

Three weeks have slipped by since our last update. As usual, we have kept ourselves busy with everyday chores, morning walks...and a few "outings".

Monday (Feb. 16) was a cloudy, rainy day but we did get out for a short walk along the river and saw this beauty...
Afterwards we went for a drive...it was a very windy, turbulent day on the ocean at Goose Spit...
Wednesday morning (Feb. 18) I was at the hospital by 8:30 for a colonoscopy. The procedure itself is no big deal, it's the preparation beforehand that is not much fun. But I made it through it all, Steve picked me up afterwards and we were at Fluid Bar and Grill by 11:30...needless to say after nothing but fluids yesterday, I was starving. I wasn't particularly concerned about my diet at that moment!
On the way home, Steve noticed this on the back window of the car in front of us...hilarious, but true!
We're going through a cold spell right now with cold temperatures along with some occasional mixed precipitation and Friday morning (Feb. 20) when we got up, it was a chilly -2C/28F.

We decided to stay away from the cold breeze off the ocean and go to Nymph Falls Nature Park for our walk. Steve took this 53 second video of the falls...
Saturday morning (Feb. 21) we woke to a dusting of snow on the ground...and the whole day was cold and wet.
The snow was mostly gone by the end of the day...
Short 15 second video of a hummingbird at the window feeder....
It was a good day for Steve to do a little maintenance on the electric fireplace. The 3 light bulbs for the flame needed to be replaced. It required a total disassembly of the fireplace!
Sunday morning (Feb. 22), we were up at 5 a.m. to watch the Canada/US Men's Gold Metal hockey game. Both the women's and men's games were great to watch...just not the outcome we had been hoping for.

We were back to sunshine and warmer temperatures Monday (Feb. 23)...a nice change after all the precipitation we have had! Tuesday (Feb. 24) was no different...Steve took a 50 second video of Comox Glacier while on our morning walk...
Thursday morning (Feb. 26) we made a last minute decision to take the shuttle bus up to Mount Washington Alpine Resort. We don't ski but after the big dump of snow (108 cm/42.5 inches) they had in 24 hours last weekend we wanted to check it out and have lunch up there. Steve wanted to go last Monday but the resort had put out a notice that they were overwhelmed with snow. Parking lots and roadways still had lots of abandoned vehicles blocking snow removal equipment, so we decided to delay it a few days. Up until now they have been having a terrible ski season with the lack of snow.

We caught the bus at Driftwood Mall just after 10:00 a.m...

We have arrived. The first thing we did was buy our bus tickets. They are only available at The Alpine Lodge and aren't required on the way up. They're $20 each for the return trip but she gave us a 2 for 1...sweet!
The long escalator tube brings you back up from the innertube run...

1:40 minute video....
We went into Ted's Bar and Grill just after 11:30 to ensure we got a window table...
Ski Bear...
Within minutes of our arrival the place was packed...

We caught the shuttle bus just before 1:00 to head back down the mountain...the bus also drove down to the Paradise Meadows area in case there were any passengers waiting for pick up.

Ocean views as we head down...

We were back at the car around 2:30...a great day!

Saturday morning (Feb. 28) on our walk at the airpark/riverfront, we noticed a couple of racoons sleeping up in a tree...
Cute!
Sunday (Mar. 1) was a beautiful sunny day...so we decided to go for a walk along the oceanfront at Point Holmes...

The annual herring spawn is happening in this area and the gillnet fleet is ready...

Yes, those are crazy folks going out for a swim...every morning weather permitting...Brrrr!
Comox Glacier from Goose Spit...
Steve's cousin, Bev and husband, Rob came over to the island from the mainland for a few days to visit friends that also live here, so on Wednesday (Mar. 4) we met them for lunch at the Blackfin Pub.

Left to right around the table...Bev, me, Steve, Maria, Wayne and Rob...
We had a great visit and meal...so glad we were able to get together!

Afterwards, Steve and I went for a walk along the Fisherman's Wharf Boardwalk...

Thursday morning (Mar. 5) we had the truck packed and were on the road just after 9:30. We are heading down island to Lake Cowichan to visit Ray and Deb...they invited us down so that Steve could join Ray in the Frostbite Fishing Derby on Saturday.

On our way down, we stopped to visit Don and Rhonda (my brother and SIL). We had a nice visit and about an hour later we were back on the highway with our next stop at the Shady Rest Pub at Qualicum Beach, our favourite stop for lunch...especially on a beautiful sunny day!
We arrived at Deb and Ray's about 2:30 and after unloading the truck and getting settled, we were sitting out on the deck under the gazebo, enjoying the view. They have added a clear plastic enclosure that blocks the wind and with the heaters and propane fire going, it's nice and toasty. My favourite view and place to sit...
As usual, Deb was planning a wonderful dinner...prime rib on the rotisserie...
Delicious, as usual!
They are dog sitting their daughter's family dog...Olaf. A gorgeous Golden Retriever that I was so glad to finally meet!
Friday morning (Mar. 6), Ray and Steve launched the boat...it had been stored in the garage, so they got it ready for fishing by adding all the required paraphernalia. They towed it to the nearby boat launch and after launching it, Steve towed the trailer back to the house while Ray brought the boat to the dock...
Olaf keeping an eye on Poppa down at the dock...
We had to make a run into Duncan for a wire extension for one of Ray's downriggers so decided to have lunch at the Red Arrow Brewery...
Back at the lake it was a socked-in rainy day...
Resume position under the gazebo!
Saturday morning (Mar. 7) the guys headed out at 7:40...dressed warmly, with rain gear and hot mocha and snacks. Over to Steve...

Captain Kyle...
The rain threatened us all morning but never appeared...
We trolled back and forth in front of a couple of fly fishermen at Meads Creek with no luck. We didn't see them catch anything either...
Ray's photo...
We crossed the lake and trolled in front of another creek near Honeymoon Bay. We were surprised to see a couple of guys sitting at the back of this houseboat trolling the shoreline as well...
As soon as they left, Deb brought out her Instant Pot and a ham bone from the freezer and made split pea soup...and a batch of baking powder biscuits.

The fishermen came back in around 11:30, and we all enjoyed hot soup and biscuits for lunch...delicious! No fish yet...so within the hour they were back out on the lake trying to catch the illusive fish!

Steve here...Unfortunately fishing was a bust! Ray had even contacted a local a few days before and was shown the tackle to use and locations to fish. He was also told that fishing wasn't very good this time of year...great! Why would you hold a fishing derby at the wrong time of the year. Oh well. 😁

Our tickets also included the weigh in at the Legion as well as dinner. Shortly after our arrival they announced the winners. The top winner not only won 1st ($250) prize, but also 3rd ($100) prize! The 2nd place winner won ($150) I was disappointed that they never announced how many entries there were and how many fish were caught. Were we the only losers? 😕😕The beer and desert was good but dinner not so much. They had lots of door prizes from local merchants. Ray won a pair of boots and I won a hooked fish club. All in all though it was a great day and evening...thanks Ray! I think we'll have better luck in May when all the hatches are happening...

What a change in weather Sunday morning (Mar. 8)...blue sky with fluffy white clouds! Ray, Steve and I took Olaf for a walk at the park next door while Deb made a quick trip to the local market for a few groceries.
The rest of the morning was spent in the kitchen, Deb prepping for dinner while I cleaned up dishes behind her...the guys sat outside on the deck.

Lunch today was at the Youbou Pub. Youbou (pronounced You-bow) is another small community on the other side of the lake and further west. It is famous for all the Elk that visit the community. We saw 5 Elk cows in town but had traffic behind us and couldn't stop for photos. Deb and Ray had raved about the burgers served and apparently Steve totally agreed. I didn't partake this time but will on our next visit!
Snow was in the forecast Monday (Mar. 9) and we thought we might wake up to a little but it didn't start until a little later. Steve had showered and was packing up the truck and I was drying my hair when I happened to notice big white fluffy flakes in through the window behind me in the mirror. Yikes, I better get moving!
With the truck packed, and after big hugs to Deb and Ray, we were on the road by 9:15! Thanks so much for a wonderful time, as usual!

Snow as we leave Lake Cowichan...
Steve took a 28 second video combining the snow at Ray and Deb's along with our drive as we head out...
As we got closer to Duncan and our turn north onto the Tran-Canada highway, the snow stopped, the roads were dry and the sun even peeked out! And we had a lovely drive home...amazing how quickly it can change.

It was a very chilly start when we got up Tuesday morning (Mar. 10th)...only 14C/57F in the trailer! To top it off, both propane tanks ended up being empty, so no furnace! This surprised Steve as he thought one had plenty but apparently not! Luckily we also have the BBQ tank, so he quickly hooked it up!

Our first order of the day was to get the propane tanks filled at Costco...then we went to the airpark and froze our butts off walking. It was 3C/37.4F and the wind was brutal! Needless to say, instead of our usual 4km walk, we cut it short at 2 kms.

And that brings us up-to-date again!

Saturday, January 31 to Sunday, February 15, 2026 (Puntledge RV Park, Courtenay, BC)

I posted our last blog early Friday (Jan. 30) before we had had a chance to see the results of a night of heavy rain so when we headed out to Costco to gas the truck up in prep for our drive down island the next day, we were amazed to find the amount of flooding! The Comox Valley Regional Emergency Operations Centre issued a state of local emergency later in the morning. Some rural residences with livestock had to be rescued.

The ditch as we leave our site has flooded across the road...
A 42 second video of the flooding in the lower part of the campground...it is closed this time of year...
Lewis Park is completely flooded!
Lewis Park is a 17.39 acre municipally-owned park located immediately to the east of the Courtenay River bridge, across from Simms Millennium Park on the Old Island Highway. The park is naturally bounded by the Courtenay, Puntledge and Tsolum Rivers and features several mature trees, open play fields, trails, tennis courts, skateboard park and four notable buildings.

The heavy rain we had Thursday night and Friday continued Saturday (Jan. 31) as we drove down island on our way to Rob and Angie's. By the time we arrived at Cowichan Bay to meet our  good friends, Jim and Nan, for lunch at the pub, the rain had finally subsided considerably.

We enjoyed lunch while catching up with them...
We arrived at Rob and Angie's around 2:30 and spent the rest of the afternoon catching up with them. Of course, they prepared a delicious dinner for us!
After dinner, the dishes were cleared and we had fun playing Hedbanz...a fast-paced, "yes" or "no" question-based, "What am I?" party game where 2-6 players wear headbands holding cards (animals, foods, or objects) that they cannot see. Players race against a timer to guess the card on their head, aiming to be the first to collect three scoring badges.

Only Bryce, Angie and Rob (and us) playing as Conner was at a friends place for a sleep-over...
What a fun evening!

Sunday  morning (Feb. 1) we met more good friends, Rob and Nancy, for breakfast. Always good catching up with them!
Afterwards, we ran a few errands and then met Steve's sister and her husband, Nadine and Mike, along with Mike's nephew and his wife, Glen and Tina, for coffee at Fresh Cup Roastery in Saanichton. It is Nadine's birthday tomorrow, so we wanted to take the opportunity of being down here to personally wish her a happy birthday.

As usual, the reason we are down here is for an appointment and Monday morning (Feb. 2) at 10:00 we were at our dentist's office. I waited in the truck for what we assumed would be a quick appointment  as Steve was just having impressions taken for a crown...the final phase of his implant. Well, it took somewhat longer than expected but we were finally on the road heading back up island to Courtenay.

Tuesday morning (Feb. 3) we were on our usual walk at the airpark/riverway when Steve noticed the first signs of Spring...Snowdrops blooming!
We had a foggy start to the day on Thursday (Feb. 5) but it did eventually clear and we had some sun. Our walk today was at Nymph Falls Nature Park where Steve snapped this picture. The Heron had been standing on the rock not moving, almost like it was posing, but as Steve took the picture it flew off...ended up being a great picture...
When the sun came out in the afternoon, Steve decided to get started on washing the trailer...roof and awning today. The roof and shaded side of the trailer gets quite green with algae during the rainy winter months...
Friday morning (Feb. 6) Steve got right back outside to finish washing the trailer. I did a little shopping at Costco and then went to Kingfisher Pacific Resort and Spa for a wonderful 90 minute massage. Both Rob and Chris's families had given me a gift certificate for my birthday last December and I finally decided on a treatment. It was absolutely a wonderful experience!

Saturday morning (Feb. 7) we woke to rain, so instead of getting out for a walk, we decided to go for a drive instead. It was a very blustery day!

A 24 second video as we approach the waterfront at Point Holmes...
And a 1:47 minute video of Kite Surfing at Goose Spit...VERY COOL!
In our last blog, I mentioned a barge being towed in with a crane on it that will remove pieces of the 400 metre long metal retaining wall. Well, on our morning walk at the airpark Wednesday (Feb. 11) we were able to watch the crane in action as it pulled out one of the 60 foot sheet pilings. The yellow apparatus dangling from the crane grabs and vibrates as it slowly lifts the metal sheets...

Saturday morning (Feb. 14) as something different to do, we decided to drive up to Campbell River and continue along the waterfront Seawalk path that we had done a few weeks ago. Steve even relinquished the driving of our new truck over to me! LOL
It was a beautiful day...a slight breeze, though, making it a little chilly, especially when we turned around and went back to the truck...
There are many waterfront condos...

The 49th parallel runs along the Canada US border...

Since that walk was only about 2.5 kms and it was early, we decided to drive to the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge...

The hike to the falls and back (I only went to the top of the long stairway down this time) was another 2.5 kms...now it was time for lunch!

We finished our trip to Campbell River at the Fifty Parallel Tap and Grill where we enjoyed a wonderful Valentines lunch. It was a new to us spot that we had been wanting to try...we weren't disappointed!
We ended Valentine's Day at a very busy Gladstone Brewery where they had a big Valentine's Day celebration happening. Thank goodness the sun was shining because we had to sit outside! Luckily as the sun went behind a cloud, we were finishing our beer...and heading home.
Sunday morning (Feb. 15) we enjoyed a beautiful sunny walk...4 kms along the Riverway and Airpark walkway. I have started using 2 walking/hiking poles which have made a huge difference walking distances. It seems I may not have Spinal Stenosis but definitely advanced osteoarthritis in the last few discs of my spine...degenerative disc disease, ugh! I'm glad that I don't have long to wait for an MRI...it is scheduled for February 27.
