Friday, April 25 to Thursday, May 15, 2025 (Puntledge RV Park, Courtenay, BC)

Another few weeks have flown by so we I guess it's about time we do another update. As usual, we get out for our morning walks most days and of course, there are all those usual domestic chores do be done. One thing I do find is that the days really go by quickly with most mornings taken up with our coffee time, breakfast, resistance exercises (every second day), showers and kitchen cleanup...it's practically noon by the time we get home from our walk. The day is half shot!

Saturday (Apr. 26) morning we met Earl and Allison for breakfast at the Early Bird Cafe at 9:00...always a good way to start the day! Afterwards, Steve and I went for our walk along the riverfront. Instead of doing our usual Riverway Heritage and Airpark Walk, we went in the other direction on a gravel path through the trees. It's still called the Riverway Heritage Walk but it goes through the Millard Creek Conservation Area. Tides out...

This was posted at the start of the trail. Perhaps if I had actually paid attention to the sign, I may have thought differently about the trail. However, we had no problems...thankfully! Last year we saw a bear in the distance on the trail and also on the Airpark walk but they keep their distance, pretty much ignoring humans.
Having washed the car yesterday, Sunday (Apr. 27) it was the big chore of washing the truck. As usual, Steve hopes it will be his last time!
We have gotten into a routine of going up to the Gladstone Brewery every Sunday afternoon to have a brew and listen to music. Most often we walk but occasionally we drive...today we drove. This beauty was parked beside us when we left...
It's okay, but I like my red Mazda!
Wednesday (Apr. 30) morning Steve dropped the car off at Courtenay Mazda for servicing. Of course, it was time for the "major" service, so it took most of the day including a bill to match...ugh.

It was the trucks turn for servicing on Thursday (May 1). Our trip south this past winter added another 11,000 km/6,835 miles to the odometer. We dropped it off at 8:00 and then went home for breakfast and showers. We met my brother and sister-in-law, Don and Rhonda, for lunch at Roy's Towne Pub. It was the first time getting together since we returned at the end of April. It was great to finally connect and catch up...
After saying goodbye to them, we drove out to check on our little trailer at the storage area, which is not far from the pub. Steve grabbed his nitrile gloves that he had left in the trailer and we had a quick look inside...all was well.

Since we didn't walk this morning, we decided to do it this afternoon. We far prefer the morning walk! But commended ourselves for getting it done. The tide was the lowest we had ever seen as the ocean was barely visible in the distance...
Steve took a short 16 second video of a plane landing at the Airpark...
Saturday (May 3) morning after our walk, we stopped at a couple of places to get supplies for a couple of maintenance projects Steve has in the trailer. We have been looking for a new outside door mat and when Steve saw this one, he broke up...of course, we had to buy it!
That evening we met Earl and Allison at the Flying Canoe for dinner. Unfortunately, they no longer have their Saturday night special menu for $6.95...something that we had enjoyed many times over the last year or so. But, of course, rising costs made it impossible to continue so they stopped it about six weeks ago. We still enjoyed our meals...just somewhat of a bigger bill at the end of the evening!

Sunday (May 4) morning we woke to a clear and colder start to the day...only 2C/37F. For our walk today, we decided to go out to Seal Bay Regional Nature Park...our first time since getting back.

As usual, a beautiful walk in the forest!

After our walk, we went for a drive checking out some of our favourite sights that, again, we hadn't seen since our return from our winter down south.  It was a beautiful day!

Kye Bay...

Then we went down to Lazo Road and Point Holmes...
And finally, Goose Spit Park...

A close-up of Comox Glacier and surrounding mountains...
We walked up to the Gladstone Brewery that afternoon, as usual, and saw a rather interesting pet with one of the patrons...a baby pig!
Another hike at Nymph Falls Nature Park Tuesday (May 6) morning...

I went shopping while Steve repaired a new crack in the shower tub pan. He drilled holes on either end of the crack to stop them from spreading then applied JB Weld. This is the second time this has happened. We had the original shower pan replaced for the same reason in Elkhart Indiana when we were there in 2018.
When I got back, he had everything out of the cabinet under the kitchen sink...he had discovered another leak. Apparently it was leaking from the sink strainer basket, so he had to take it all apart, clean it up and head to Home Hardware for a new gasket...
Another hike at Nymph Falls Friday (May 9) morning...it is one of our favourites!
Long exposure shots...

Such a beautiful spot with great trails.

Saturday (May 10) morning we went to pick up the truck from it's service and all was good. Because we won't be around for awhile after my upcoming surgery we won't be advertising it for sale until we get back.

Sunday (May 11) was a mainly cloudy day with some rain throughout the day. We headed out just before 10:00 to Don and Rhonda's (my brother and sister-in-law). It is Don's 75th birthday today and Rhonda invited us out for Birthday Brunch. We had a wonderful brunch and a great visit!
Happy Birthday, Don!
Monday (May 12) after our morning walk, we went to the Heritage House Pub for lunch. It is a new place having opened in February in a renovated building that, I believe, used to be a restaurant.
We sat out on the patio overlooking the river inlet...

A delicious lunch...definitely worth returning!

Tuesday (May 13) afternoon we headed back out to Kye Bay in the hope of seeing the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds Demonstration Team . They were just taking off and flew over us as we drove past the end of the runway. They are here once again for their annual training from May 3rd to the 25th in preparation for the upcoming season of airshows across North America.

The hazy sky was not the best for photography...

A 3:05 minute video...
The folks on the ferry from Comox to Powell River also had a great show!
I find the Snowbirds absolutely amazing! So fun to watch!

Wednesday (May 14) morning after hiking Nymph Falls (yes, again!), I went to the Red Cross Loan Cupboard to pick up the equipment I will need after my knee surgery. It's wonderful that they offer such a service without cost other than encouraging a donation of your choice. So I'm all set up with a 2-wheel walker, cane, toilet riser and tub transfer bench.

Thursday (May 15) morning on our walk around the Airpark had more than just the usual Cessnas taking off and landing...an RCMP helicopter came right over us and landed.

Steve took a short 48 second video of the helicopter landing and taking off.
A police dog and his handler were dropped off...
Always cool watching the aircraft at this small airfield.

And there we have it...all caught up for now! Tomorrow we are heading down Island to spend the long weekend with Rob, Angie and the boys...along with Chris, Angela and Isaac who are coming over from Coquitlam (Vancouver)! Not often we all get together, especially when it's not a special occasion but always wonderful when the whole family gets together.

On Tuesday, May 20, right after the long weekend, I have to be at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria at 8:30 a.m. for knee replacement surgery...the right knee this time. The left knee was done October 8, 2019.

On our way down Island, we are stopping at Ray and Deb's at Lake Cowichan to drop off my medical equipment and other things we will need next week. They have so generously offered their basement suite for me to recover immediately after my knee replacement surgery...a one-bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area with no stairs to deal with! How lucky am I...or should I say "we".

Thursday, April 17 to Thursday, April 24, 2025 (A trip down island - North Saanich and Lake Cowichan, BC)

We had the car all packed Thursday (Apr. 17) morning and hit the road just after 10:00...heading south to Victoria and our son's place in North Saanich. We decided to take the "scenic" Island Highway, rather than the faster Inland Highway.

For something different, we decided to try Black Creek Pub, just north of Parksville, for lunch. We have passed the turnoff to it many times and wondered what it was like. Well, wonder no more...it wasn't great. Not terrible...Steve enjoyed his burger but the draft beer we ordered was flat and my chowder was lukewarm but tasty and Caesar salad was so drenched in  dressing that I couldn't eat it. Glad we tried it but I wouldn't bother again. Another thing we found strange is that it's on the water, with a marina in front but the pub is on ground-level of a 2-story building and has no view because of the parking lot.
We arrived at Rob and Angie's around 3:30, unloaded the car and chilled as we waited for everyone to get home from work/school.

The boys are really interested in their music...actually as a way to keep them off their computers during spring break, Angie took them to Long and McQuade Musical Instruments in Victoria and rented a keyboard for Bryce...
Bryce has also been drumming for quite awhile (the set is his, not rented)...
...and Conner an electric guitar (he also plays the trumpet in the school band)...
We had a great evening catching up!

Friday (Apr. 18)...and an absolutely gorgeous morning! Steve and I went into Sidney to our favourite waterfront walk...
The Sidney Pier...

Lots of folks out walk on this beautiful Good Friday morning...

On our way back...
This yacht was just entering the marina. In the distance is Mount Baker in Washington State...

Rob is roasting chickens on the rotisserie for dinner...
Yum...they look delicious!
Steve, me, Angie, Bryce and Rob...Conner was having a sleepover at a friends place...
Saturday (Apr.19) morning I headed to Saanich Peninsula Hospital for x-rays, blood tests and ECG in preparation for my knee replacement surgery next month. I was in and out within an hour...sweet! Probably because it was the Easter Long Weekend...good timing on my part!

Once home, Rob, Bryce, Steve and I went out for a walk on the trails behind their house...

Rob and Bryce are having a pinecone fight...looks like Rob is "reloading"...

The trails are beautiful with fresh springtime leaves having sprouted...

A gnarly tree...
Just after 1:00 we all headed into Victoria for Bryce's Flag Football game. They had about a half hour of practice before a couple of short games. Bryce throwing the football...

Although mainly sunny, there was quite a breeze making it darned chilly...
Game 1...Bryce catching the football and getting his first touchdown!
Game 2...Steve got a great shot of Bryce intercepting a pass before getting another touchdown! It doesn't look like he was going to get it, but he did!
It was a fun afternoon watching them play. I understand the first game was a tie but Bryce's team won the second. Bryce got 3 touchdowns and threw 2 passes that resulted in touchdowns, not a bad start for his first two games!

Back home, Rob got a campfire going in the yard. Bryce cutting some firewood...

Roasting hot dogs over the campfire...
Easter Sunday (Apr. 20)...and time for an Easter Egg Hunt! Rob spent a good hour outside hiding foil-wrapped chocolate eggs...he has over an acre of property, after all. At one point, Bryce said "I wonder if Dad is okay, he's been out there a long time!" Steve responded with..."I saw him sitting on a stump eating chocolate eggs." 😂

The hunt begins!

The house we had built in 1990 and they purchased from us is on 1.21 acres...

Lots of chocolate eggs...that should keep them going for awhile! LOL
Rob slow-cooked a Prime Rib Roast on his charcoal barbeque for dinner tonight...
Great job!
A delicious Easter Sunday dinner! They always treat us to wonderful meals when we visit!
Monday (Apr. 21) morning we met our good friends, Rob and Nancy for breakfast at Mary's Bleue Moon Cafe. Always wonderful seeing and catching up with them!
After about an hour and half though, we had to say goodbye and head into Victoria for an appointment with our financial advisor. With the drop in markets, we weren't looking forward to the news. Yes, our portfolio is down but we'll survive. And who do we get to thank for that?!

That afternoon we all went out to Colwood (suburb of Victoria) to Steve's sister's for Easter Monday dinner. Mike and Nadine cooked a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings!
From left to right, around the table...Conner, Matt (Mike and Nadine's son), Nadine, Mike, Amanda (Mike and Nadine's daughter), me, Bryce, Rob, Angie...and Steve's empty chair...
Yummy dessert...
Tuesday (Apr. 22) morning we said goodbye to Rob when he left for work just before 6:30...and then Angie and the boys about an hour later when they left for school. Thanks so very much for your hospitality, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit! See ya in a month when we come back down for my surgery.

With the car packed up, we headed into Victoria for my 10:15 appointment at ReBalanceMD with my orthopaedic surgeon. My left knee replacement done October 8, 2019 is looking fine...he also described some changes in the way he will doing the surgery on my right knee next month. With that appointment over, we started our drive back up island...but we're not going home quite yet. We stopped in Cowichan Bay for a quick visit with friends Jim and Nan...and then continued on to Lake Cowichan and Ray and Deb's place (aka Kyle's Kottage).

After unloading the car, we changed into shorts and joined them out front in the sunshine. It was very warm as long as the pesky clouds didn't cover the sun!
Deb had a turkey cooking on the Traegar smoker and once it was finished, we moved to the sundeck...
Time to carve the turkey!
As usual, Deb served up an amazing dinner! We started with a salad that was SO good! Followed by smoked turkey, homemade cranberry sauce (aka turkey jam, LOL), gravy and cauliflower...and homemade cherry pie and ice cream for dessert...
After dinner we sat out on the deck...my favourite spot!
Another tough day in paradise!
Wednesday (Apr. 23) morning after a leisurely start, Deb made Eggs Benny for us. We do get spoiled when we visit! Delicious!
After everything was cleaned up, Ray and Steve headed out in the boat for a little fishing...

Steve here: I started off singing Ray a tune I learned from my fishing/hunting buddy Jim years ago. Fishy, fishy, bite. Your momma said you might. Your daddy said I don't care so fishy, fishy bite!
It didn't work, we got skunked!
But it was still nice getting out on the water again...
At 1:00 we went to Jake's at the Lake and treated Ray and Deb to lunch for hosting us. We enjoyed their burger and beer special.

Time to put the cover back on the boat...
...and then relax with an adult beverage and enjoy the view!

Resume position on the deck after leftovers for dinner...
Thursday (Apr. 24) Steve snapped these pictures as we were about to start packing up. Ray and Deb have such a beautiful home...
Not a ripple on the water this morning...and so cool with the reflection of the trees...
With big hugs, we said goodbye...such a wonderful couple of days and the weather was beautiful for April. Thank you Deb and Ray for all your hospitality...we always have a wonderful time and it was so good seeing you both. Bye for now...see ya next month!
