Another few weeks have flown by so we I guess it's about time we do another update. As usual, we get out for our morning walks most days and of course, there are all those usual domestic chores do be done. One thing I do find is that the days really go by quickly with most mornings taken up with our coffee time, breakfast, resistance exercises (every second day), showers and kitchen cleanup...it's practically noon by the time we get home from our walk. The day is half shot!
Saturday (Apr. 26) morning we met Earl and Allison for breakfast at the Early Bird Cafe at 9:00...always a good way to start the day! Afterwards, Steve and I went for our walk along the riverfront. Instead of doing our usual Riverway Heritage and Airpark Walk, we went in the other direction on a gravel path through the trees. It's still called the Riverway Heritage Walk but it goes through the Millard Creek Conservation Area. Tides out...
This was posted at the start of the trail. Perhaps if I had actually paid attention to the sign, I may have thought differently about the trail. However, we had no problems...thankfully! Last year we saw a bear in the distance on the trail and also on the Airpark walk but they keep their distance, pretty much ignoring humans.
Having washed the car yesterday, Sunday (Apr. 27) it was the big chore of washing the truck. As usual, Steve hopes it will be his last time!
We have gotten into a routine of going up to the Gladstone Brewery every Sunday afternoon to have a brew and listen to music. Most often we walk but occasionally we drive...today we drove. This beauty was parked beside us when we left...
It's okay, but I like my red Mazda!Wednesday (Apr. 30) morning Steve dropped the car off at Courtenay Mazda for servicing. Of course, it was time for the "major" service, so it took most of the day including a bill to match...ugh.
It was the trucks turn for servicing on Thursday (May 1). Our trip south this past winter added another 11,000 km/6,835 miles to the odometer. We dropped it off at 8:00 and then went home for breakfast and showers. We met my brother and sister-in-law, Don and Rhonda, for lunch at Roy's Towne Pub. It was the first time getting together since we returned at the end of April. It was great to finally connect and catch up...
After saying goodbye to them, we drove out to check on our little trailer at the storage area, which is not far from the pub. Steve grabbed his nitrile gloves that he had left in the trailer and we had a quick look inside...all was well.
Since we didn't walk this morning, we decided to do it this afternoon. We far prefer the morning walk! But commended ourselves for getting it done. The tide was the lowest we had ever seen as the ocean was barely visible in the distance...
Steve took a short 16 second video of a plane landing at the Airpark...
Saturday (May 3) morning after our walk, we stopped at a couple of places to get supplies for a couple of maintenance projects Steve has in the trailer. We have been looking for a new outside door mat and when Steve saw this one, he broke up...of course, we had to buy it!
That evening we met Earl and Allison at the Flying Canoe for dinner. Unfortunately, they no longer have their Saturday night special menu for $6.95...something that we had enjoyed many times over the last year or so. But, of course, rising costs made it impossible to continue so they stopped it about six weeks ago. We still enjoyed our meals...just somewhat of a bigger bill at the end of the evening!
Sunday (May 4) morning we woke to a clear and colder start to the day...only 2C/37F. For our walk today, we decided to go out to Seal Bay Regional Nature Park...our first time since getting back.
As usual, a beautiful walk in the forest!
Kye Bay...
Then we went down to Lazo Road and Point Holmes...
And finally, Goose Spit Park...
A close-up of Comox Glacier and surrounding mountains...
We walked up to the Gladstone Brewery that afternoon, as usual, and saw a rather interesting pet with one of the patrons...a baby pig!
I went shopping while Steve repaired a new crack in the shower tub pan. He drilled holes on either end of the crack to stop them from spreading then applied JB Weld. This is the second time this has happened. We had the original shower pan replaced for the same reason in Elkhart Indiana when we were there in 2018.

Another hike at Nymph Falls Nature Park Tuesday (May 6) morning...

When I got back, he had everything out of the cabinet under the kitchen sink...he had discovered another leak. Apparently it was leaking from the sink strainer basket, so he had to take it all apart, clean it up and head to Home Hardware for a new gasket...
Another hike at Nymph Falls Friday (May 9) morning...it is one of our favourites!
Long exposure shots...
Such a beautiful spot with great trails.
Saturday (May 10) morning we went to pick up the truck from it's service and all was good. Because we won't be around for awhile after my upcoming surgery we won't be advertising it for sale until we get back.
Sunday (May 11) was a mainly cloudy day with some rain throughout the day. We headed out just before 10:00 to Don and Rhonda's (my brother and sister-in-law). It is Don's 75th birthday today and Rhonda invited us out for Birthday Brunch. We had a wonderful brunch and a great visit!
Happy Birthday, Don!
Monday (May 12) after our morning walk, we went to the Heritage House Pub for lunch. It is a new place having opened in February in a renovated building that, I believe, used to be a restaurant.
We sat out on the patio overlooking the river inlet...
A delicious lunch...definitely worth returning!
Tuesday (May 13) afternoon we headed back out to Kye Bay in the hope of seeing the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds Demonstration Team . They were just taking off and flew over us as we drove past the end of the runway. They are here once again for their annual training from May 3rd to the 25th in preparation for the upcoming season of airshows across North America.
The hazy sky was not the best for photography...
A 3:05 minute video...
The folks on the ferry from Comox to Powell River also had a great show!
I find the Snowbirds absolutely amazing! So fun to watch!
Wednesday (May 14) morning after hiking Nymph Falls (yes, again!), I went to the Red Cross Loan Cupboard to pick up the equipment I will need after my knee surgery. It's wonderful that they offer such a service without cost other than encouraging a donation of your choice. So I'm all set up with a 2-wheel walker, cane, toilet riser and tub transfer bench.
Thursday (May 15) morning on our walk around the Airpark had more than just the usual Cessnas taking off and landing...an RCMP helicopter came right over us and landed.
Steve took a short 48 second video of the helicopter landing and taking off.
A police dog and his handler were dropped off...
Always cool watching the aircraft at this small airfield.
And there we have it...all caught up for now! Tomorrow we are heading down Island to spend the long weekend with Rob, Angie and the boys...along with Chris, Angela and Isaac who are coming over from Coquitlam (Vancouver)! Not often we all get together, especially when it's not a special occasion but always wonderful when the whole family gets together.
On Tuesday, May 20, right after the long weekend, I have to be at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria at 8:30 a.m. for knee replacement surgery...the right knee this time. The left knee was done October 8, 2019.
On our way down Island, we are stopping at Ray and Deb's at Lake Cowichan to drop off my medical equipment and other things we will need next week. They have so generously offered their basement suite for me to recover immediately after my knee replacement surgery...a one-bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area with no stairs to deal with! How lucky am I...or should I say "we".
