Monday, July 15, 2013 (Travel to Tok, Alaska)

It was another beautiful sunny day as we continued north on the Alaska Highway...

It wasn't long before we ran into road construction.  As we went through Destruction Bay, we encountered a long gravel stretch that we had to be piloted through...this is the start of the rough roads all the way to Tok. The gravel sections are for the most part better than the paved highway.

The purple fireweed is gorgeous...

And another gravel stretch...the trailer is going to need another good vacuuming when we get to Tok!

A very lumpy, bumpy road...but at least the views are spectacular!

Duke River...

We stopped at a rest area with interpretive displays...and fabulous views of the Kluane River valley...

Donjek River...

A young bear...yikes!

More spectacular scenery!!!

Sanpete Creek...

I believe these are the Enger Lakes...

This is the Shakwak Highway Project...Permafrost Test Research Sections...

Beaver Creek, Yukon...

Canada Customs...

The fireweed lining the highway...just beautiful!

More road construction!  We had to wait for the pilot truck to come and take us through...

 Two swans...

More lumpy, bumpy highway!

Steve standing half in Canada and half in the USA...

As soon as we crossed into Alaska, we were greeted with 14 miles of newly paved highway...YAY!

It was just a teaser, though...soon we were at another section of road construction..

The Tok River...

After a grueling 7 hour drive, we arrived in Tok, Alaska.  We had planned on staying at Tundra Lodge and RV Park but by the time we arrived, all long sites were taken.  So we drove back to Tok Village RV Park....a nice RV park but a little too costly for us with a Good Sam rate of $47.28 US/night.  We decided to stay one night and then try Tundra RV Park tomorrow.

We got set up and I gave the trailer a good vacuuming and wipe-down...the inside was just covered in dust!  Boy, are we going to have to give the rig a good cleaning when we get back south after this trip!  Hindsight is wonderful, however, I wish that we had bought a truck and camper for this trip and then sold it once we got back.  The roads are pretty rough on our rig.  Interesting, though, there are lots and lots of big rigs...class A motorhomes and fifth-wheels on the road.

  1. We are thinking of renting a small C to make the Alaska trip and save our rig.

    1. I think what we should of done is buy a truck and camper or a small Class C then sell it after the trip. This trip shouldn't be rushed...6-8 weeks minimum and those rentals are very expensive.
