Wednesday, August 10, 2011 (Mt. Fernie Provincial Park, Fernie, BC)

It was almost 11:00 by the time we headed out this morning...no need to rush; we are retired, after all!  I was just posting our blog when Chris called and I was just finishing that call when Steve’s Uncle Gord from Edmonton called on Skype.   After a nice chat with him, it was time to get on with our day.

Our plan was to drive into Fernie, park and walk the downtown area.  But first we were going to book a whitewater rafting trip.  We decided to book the trip with Mountain High River Adventures (www.raftfernie.com) for Friday...so we meet at a local hotel just a short distance down the highway at 9:00 a.m. and will be taking the day long "Raging Elk Canyon" trip...described as "15 kms of wilderness and white water, the Raging Elk Canyon carves its way through the Rocky Mountains with towering peaks, vertical canyon walls, and cliff jumping.  This popular class 2/3/4 adventure is best from late June to September"...yikes! This should truly be an adventure for us!

With that all booked, we drove into Fernie.  We stopped to take pictures of this building...not exactly sure what is in it...all it says on the door in is "Government Agent"...

We parked in front of City Hall...a really lovely old building.  Built in 1905, it was once the home of the Crows Nest Pass Coal Company.  A display called ‘‘Miner‘s Walk‘‘ is currently being built on the grounds in front of the building...it should be really nice when finished (we have read the description and seen the concept drawings).

We walked one block over to the main street and started off at the Visitors Centre and Museum...

We walked both sides of 2nd Avenue and then over to 1st Avenue that runs along the railroad tracks...taking lots of pictures...

'Three Sisters' Mountains in the background...
The old Fernie Railway Station...it is now home to a restaurant...
...and the other direction...

It was 1:00 by this time so we decided to go into The Brickhouse restaurant...a very cool place housed in an old brick building...

After a delicious lunch, we headed back to the truck and off to find a hiking trail...there are lots of hiking trails in the area and Steve had picked one after studying the Fernie map this morning.  But first here is a another picture of the "Three Sisters"...
We parked by “Maiden Lake‘‘ and with our backpack and map, we were off...it was shortly after 2:00.  Here is a picture of the lake...
We started on the Great Northern Trail which follows the edge of Elk River...
Here is a fellow fly-fishing...I believe he said he was from Montana...(Steve plans on doing this sometime while we are here)...

...and then circles around a golf course, crosses the railway tracks and turns into Old Stumpy Trail.

It was 3:30 by the time we were back at the truck...we were tired and hot after our 5.7 km walk but had had a good hike.  For some reason Steve had a problem with one shoe...he ended up with a blister on one heel...very odd considering he has been wearing the shoes for a long time without any problems.

The rest of the afternoon and evening was pretty much as usual...we sat outside until around 6pm and then went inside to make dinner and watch the evening news.  Tomorrow we may go up to Fernie Alpine Resort and take the chairlift up the mountain...we will see what the weather forecast is for the day first though!
